In a surprising turn of events, Microsoft has reportedly scrapped plans for the PS5 version of Gears of War: E-Day, as per the latest reports. Earlier today, the game’s PEGI rating went live with Sony’s console listed among the platforms, leading many to believe that the collaboration was imminent.
Furthermore, retailer databases have been rumbling with a SKU for a physical PS5 version of the third-person shooter. Journalist Jeff Grubb, who broke this news earlier in the day, claims that an almost-completed build of the game is stored on a hard drive somewhere.
Grubb stated, “So yeah, there’s a basically finished version of Gears for PlayStation sitting on a drive.”
Rumors are mounting that the latest iteration of the franchise may have been shelved just weeks ago, especially with a slated release on October 6th that would have positioned the game near completion on the PS5.
Xbox has clarified that the title is not a timed exclusive, suggesting it will never appear on Sony’s platform.
Whether the company will stick to this decision remains uncertain, as it has recently flipped its stance on several projects, making it increasingly hard for fans to keep track.
This marks the second time a Gears of War title has been developed for PlayStation and then cancelled; a PS3 version of Gears of War 3 surfaced a few years back, echoing the same pattern.
Fans of the franchise are left perplexed as the highly anticipated port for the PlayStation 5 has been abruptly pulled from the release schedule, raising questions about the decision’s timing and the future of the title on the console.
