Amazon Confirms Strong Bond with 007: First Light Developer

In an exciting development for gaming enthusiasts, the return of James Bond is on the horizon as Amazon has confirmed that a potential future installment may be developed in collaboration with IO Interactive, the studio behind the critically acclaimed 007 First Light game, which has already sold over 1.5 million copies and garnered rave reviews.

An Amazon spokesperson clarified to VGC that while Amazon MGM holds the rights to any future James Bond video games, discussions about future projects are still premature. The spokesperson went on to praise the partnership with IO Interactive, expressing pride in their joint efforts on 007 First Light. They also hinted at more revelations from IO Interactive regarding 007 First Light in the near future and expressed anticipation for what’s next.

This new statement comes after earlier comments from Amazon Game Studios boss Jeff Gattis seemed to suggest that Amazon might develop the next Bond game without IOI. On June 4, in an interview with Polygon, Gattis discussed how First Light, a game greenlit before Amazon acquired MGM and the Bond license, was self-published by IOI.

During a recent interview, the developer clarified that the current Bond title was not produced under a full licensing agreement. He added that future installments would be handled by MGM, with Amazon Game Studios theoretically stepping in.

This remark quickly went viral, sparking speculation that Amazon would take the reins on all forthcoming 007 projects, effectively sidelining the original studio behind the first game. The backlash was intense, yet the reality appears to be more nuanced: Amazon’s role would likely center on publishing and providing greater oversight, a logical move given its ownership of the Bond IP.

It has always seemed unlikely that Amazon, which has trimmed its own development slate in recent years, could single‑handedly produce a sequel to a complex title like First Light. A more plausible scenario involves Amazon partnering with an external studio—mirroring its collaboration with Crystal Dynamics and Flying Wild Hog on new Tomb Raider entries—to deliver the next Bond adventure.

In its statement to VGC, Amazon did not confirm a sequel to First Light, noting that it was “still too early to discuss future projects.” However, given the game’s strong performance and Amazon’s swift clarification of the Bond narrative, it seems highly probable that the original studio will receive another opportunity to develop a 007 title.
