A new journalistic investigation has exposed that the Chinese military has systematically bypassed U.S. commercial sanctions to acquire advanced artificial intelligence chips manufactured by NVIDIA. This massive leak reveals how Asian military forces have utilized an international network of smuggling to procure American technology and bolster their military operations, despite stringent prohibitions imposed by the White House.
The data comes from an extensive analysis conducted by Wirescreen and The New York Times, who reviewed thousands of government purchases made between the years 2019 and 2025. In these records, nearly five hundred operations were discovered where almost all branches of the Chinese military attempted to procure high-end processors for executing nuclear explosion simulations and complex cybersecurity tools.
Since restrictions imposed in 2022 only penalized direct export from U.S. territory, the high domestic demand fueled a highly profitable black market that routed shipments through countries such as Singapore, Taiwan, and Japan. This illicit trafficking network reached such alarming dimensions that even one of the founders of Supermicro, a gigantic company specializing in server manufacturing and computer infrastructure, was accused of smuggling equipment with this technology for a value of 2.5 billion dollars.
In the face of this controversy, NVIDIA’s Executive Director Jensen Huang has consistently argued that such bans would be counterproductive and would ultimately force rival companies to develop their own domestic industries out of necessity. On the other hand, John Rizzo, NVIDIA’s official spokesperson, told The New York Times that advanced systems truly require hundreds of thousands of processors, a figure far from the minuscule quantities reflected in filtered sales. This situation presents a real nightmare for American politicians who are determined to avoid giving any strategic or tactical advantage to their commercial and military rivals from the East at all costs.
Despite President Donald Trump’s unexpected policy reversal at the end of 2025, which allowed the resumption of export license deliveries for the H200 model, several Republican legislators continue to push for a law that would grant the Congress absolute power over these international sales. If this new legislation passes, it would pose a significant barrier for Asian arms manufacturing institutions, although it may come too late due to countermeasures initiated by the Beijing administration. The Chinese government itself has ordered its customs agents to intercept components such as the H200 model and the RTX 5090D V2 graphics cards directly at the border in a desperate attempt to force their companies to consume domestic products and thus strengthen national semiconductor production.
