For those who found the initial MSRP of this year’s LEGO Pokémon sets overwhelming, rest assured that the latest wave offers a more diverse and budget-friendly selection. These “Smart Play” sets cater to various preferences, even providing cheaper alternatives for individuals unwilling to invest hundreds of dollars in plastic toys while still indulging in the hobby. The set featuring Charizard, Blastoise, and Venusaur, priced at an eye-watering $650, is a clear example of what I’m referring to.

While there are still costly sets in the lineup, such as Charizard vs. Jolteon Ultimate Battle for $119.99 and Cubone and Gengar’s Spooky Showdown at $89.99, a significant number of sets fall within the range of $15 to $60. This price point is more manageable (at least psychologically speaking), especially for those purchasing toys for children.

Regrettably, the newly unveiled LEGO sets lack the Smart Brick component, an essential element that facilitates interactive play with lights and sounds. This omission makes these sets seem more like optional add-ons for display purposes, unless one is solely interested in showcasing them. For collectors like me who have a considerable collection of unopened LEGO sets due to lack of space for display, this might not be an immediate purchase.

However, the Mewtwo set, Squirtle on a buggy, and the one featuring all three Paldean starters are undeniably captivating. The charm of these sets lies in their unique characters and designs that resonate with fans of the Pokémon franchise.
