In a recent interview with the Japanese outlet Futaman, conducted via VGC, Masato Kumazawa—producer of Resident Evil Requiem—delved into the future possibilities for the franchise’s setting.
While Raccoon City drew inspiration from the United States and a Spanish village served as the backdrop for Resident Evil 4, fans have long speculated about the prospect of a game set in Japan itself.
Kumazawa acknowledged that the idea has been on the developers’ radar. “I believe a Japanese setting is something that all Japanese fans of Resident Evil have imagined, and I have considered it as well. Since the core team is based in Japan, everyone has thought about it. Although Japan hasn’t yet appeared as a game location, it could very well emerge in the future,” he explained.
While Resident Evil’s expansion into Japan might initially seem far‑fetched, the franchise’s appeal to Western audiences—and the precedent set by another IP—makes it a logical move.
That precedent is Silent Hill. Last year, Konami released Silent Hill F, a game set in a 1960s Japanese village. It marked the first time the horror series stepped outside its signature cursed American town, and the shift was met with praise from both critics and players.
