Celebrating two decades of dominance, ASUS’s ROG gaming division is unveiling a fresh iteration of its handheld gaming PC, the ROG XBOX Ally X20. The new model builds on its partnership with Microsoft, boasting a completely redesigned motherboard, an upgraded screen, refined joysticks, and a striking translucent chassis.
The most significant enhancement is the display: a 7.4‑inch OLED panel that pushes a 120‑Hz refresh rate, peaks at 1,400 nits, and supports FreeSync Premium Pro, 0.2‑ms response times, VESA DisplayHDR 1000, and full Dolby Vision. Its anti‑reflective coating cuts glare by 65%, ensuring clear visibility even in bright environments.
Innovatively, the device features a “Transforming D‑Pad” that operates as a conventional four‑way controller but can be lifted and twisted to deliver eight‑way input, catering to fighting game aficionados and other genre‑specific demands.
Joystick technology has also been overhauled, incorporating TMR (Tunneling Magnetoresistance) sensors that virtually eliminate stick drift, enhance input precision, and reduce power consumption compared to earlier Hall‑Effect magnetic sticks.
ASUS has refreshed its handheld lineup with a suite of ergonomic tweaks: the buttons have been repositioned for smoother reach, a rubberized back coating enhances grip, a fresh green Xbox logo aligns with the latest branding, and a clear plastic shell showcases the newly gold‑accented internals.
Despite these cosmetic and ergonomic improvements, the core hardware remains unchanged. The device still runs on an AMD Ryzen AI Z2 Extreme processor, paired with 24 GB of LPDDR5X RAM and a 1 TB PCIe 4.0 NVMe drive.
While ASUS has yet to disclose a price, the ROG Xbox Ally X20 is slated to hit the market during the upcoming holiday season.
