CD Projekt Red: The Witcher Trilogy Won’t Feature Expansions

bekir May 30, 2026 3 min read 4 views

CD Projekt Red has raised the bar for its fanbase by announcing that the upcoming expansion for The Witcher 3, titled “Songs of the Past”, will act as a narrative bridge to the next sequel and will match the scale of the critically acclaimed “Blood and Wine” add‑on. This bold move signals a new era for the Witcher franchise, as the studio has also revealed that the forthcoming trilogy will not receive any additional expansions.

Analysis: By committing to a closed‑world approach for the next three titles, CD Projekt Red is reshaping the industry’s expansion model, forcing developers to deliver complete, self‑contained stories from the outset and potentially influencing how future RPGs balance content depth with post‑launch support.

The decision to forego extra content means the Polish studio must craft a fully self‑sufficient main narrative for its new saga, ensuring every plot thread concludes neatly within the base games. Without the safety net of post‑launch expansions, writers face a monumental challenge: they must deliver a robust, cohesive story right from day one.

During a Q&A session following its first‑quarter earnings report, CD Projekt Red explained that adding further content to upcoming titles would be highly problematic given the company’s demanding release schedule. Executives clarified that the primary goal is to launch the three new Witcher games within a strict six‑year window, which makes logistical sense but leaves little room for planning expansions for the future saga.

While the business rationale behind the decision makes sense from a development standpoint, it marks a significant shift for the franchise—especially given how DLCs have become integral to its narrative universe.

Current forecasts from the Polish site Strefa Inwestorów, drawing on an analysis by financial firm Noble Securities, are highly optimistic. They predict that the upcoming expansion, “Songs of the Past,” will retail at $30 and could sell 11 million copies, giving The Witcher 3 a substantial commercial boost.

Reports indicate that the DLC will carry a budget of roughly $15 million and will focus its storyline on Ciri, cementing her role as the definitive protagonist of the next title. Noble Securities analysts even argue that the release of this expansion will serve as the official launchpad for the marketing campaign of the highly anticipated The Witcher 4.

Regarding the forthcoming fourth entry, the studio previewed during its official podcast AnsweRED that the game will address past mechanical complaints by introducing a revamped movement system for Ciri—allowing her to jump with a dedicated button, swim to confront aquatic monsters, and cast spells while on the move. The development team also confirmed that the new title will feature over eighty exclusive animations to convey the protagonist’s emotions, as well as a world with a significantly higher level of NPC interactivity than its predecessor.

Fans won’t have to wait long to see these advancements in action, as CD Projekt Red plans to unveil further details—and possibly a first trailer—at the Unreal Engine Fest scheduled for June. These innovations aim to lay the groundwork for the studio’s next generation, setting a new technical benchmark for the saga before launching its rigorous release cycle.
