Balatro Publisher Being Sold To Private Equity Firm That Owns GameSpot

Integrated Media Company, the parent of gaming and entertainment giants such as GameSpot, Fandom, and Curse, is on the brink of acquiring Playstack, the publisher behind the hit card game Balatro.

According to a notice released on May 21 and reported by Game Developer, Trufin Holdings intends to sell 84.5 percent of its stake in PlayStack to VantageCo Limited—a wholly owned subsidiary of Integrated Media Company—for roughly £112.4 million (about $151 million). The transaction remains contingent on a shareholder vote and has not yet been finalized.

Analysis: This deal signals a strategic push by Integrated Media to deepen its foothold in the indie publishing arena, potentially reshaping the competitive landscape for mid‑tier game developers seeking robust distribution partners.

Playstack’s CEO, Harvey Elliott, reassured stakeholders that the ownership shift will not alter the company’s core values: “Our team, our strategy, and our commitment to publishing premium indie games remain exactly the same. For now, it’s business as usual.”

Beyond Balatro, Playstack has a diverse portfolio that includes titles such as The Case of the Golden Idol, The Rise of the Golden Idol, Ak‑xolotl, Unbeatable, and About Fishing. The publisher boasts an impressive hit rate of over 85 percent, meaning that more than 85 percent of its releases have yielded positive returns.

Balatro itself has surpassed five million copies sold as of January 2025 and has garnered numerous accolades, including Best Independent Game, Best Debut Indie, and Best Mobile Game at the 2024 Game Awards, as well as Game of the Year, Best Debut, Best Design, and Innovation Awards at the Game Developers Choice Awards.

Integrated Media Company, owned by private‑equity firm TPG Inc., manages 15 media and entertainment brands, ranging from Fandom and Curse to Screen Junkies and GameSpot—acquired under the Fandom umbrella in 2022. VantageCo appears to be a newly formed acquisition vehicle, and its exact placement within Integrated Media’s corporate structure remains to be clarified.

IGN Entertainment, the parent company of the long‑standing gaming news outlet GameSpot, is set to broaden its footprint into game publishing—a strategic move reminiscent of IGN’s earlier acquisition of Humble Bundle’s charity‑bundle platform and its publishing arm, Humble Games.

In a 2024 corporate reshuffle, Humble Games was downsized, with 36 staff members let go. Although the Humble Bundle charity‑bundle service continues to operate, the publishing division has yet to release a new title since the reorganization.

As a former employee of IGN Entertainment until last month, I can confirm that these changes reflect a broader strategy to align media, community engagement, and game development under a single corporate umbrella.

Price will be the deciding factor. Balatro Publisher Being Sold To looks interesting, but waitin for a sale is way smarter than buying day on. Waiting is definitely safer than pre-ordering
