Nextcloud Sets Release Date for Euro Game

Nextcloud has set a firm release date for its new collaborative Euro‑Office suite, announcing that it will be available to users on June 9, just a few days from now.

Euro‑Office is essentially a fork of the popular OnlyOffice platform, created by a consortium of European firms—including Nextcloud and IONOS—to provide a sovereign, privacy‑focused solution that challenges the dominance of proprietary cloud productivity suites.

Although the coalition unveiled the project only two months ago, it has already sparked controversy. The upstream OnlyOffice community has taken issue with the fork, citing the removal of original logos and branding from the codebase.

OnlyOffice’s AGPLv3 license contains a contentious “Section 7” clause that mandates derivative works to preserve the ONLYOFFICE brand, logos, and attribution. By disregarding these requirements, Nextcloud and its partners faced accusations of copyright infringement, leading OnlyOffice to sever an eight‑year partnership with Nextcloud in an immediate response.

Nextcloud’s engineering squad has publicly challenged the validity of the contested branding clauses, deeming them legally untenable. The developers opted for a hard fork rather than merely contributing upstream, citing that OnlyOffice consistently dismissed community pull requests and left code comments in Russian, thereby obstructing independent audits.

One might question the necessity of a new office suite when LibreOffice already exists. The Euro-Office consortium counters this by highlighting its markedly superior performance when run inside web browsers.

Nextcloud announced that the upcoming release, scheduled for June 9, will focus on stabilizing the platform by refining the codebase and bolstering support for open document formats. To lower the entry barrier for contributors, the team has translated all remaining Russian comments into English and enhanced the automated testing pipelines. Looking ahead, the developers plan to introduce mobile applications and deeper integrations in future updates, while partner firms such as Office.eu, IONOS, and XWiki intend to deploy the software to their customers later this year.
