The classic real‑time strategy title Age of Empires II: Definitive Edition, originally launched in 2019 for Windows, has now expanded its reach to a platform it rarely targets: macOS. From today onward, Mac users can officially download and play the remastered edition.
It has been decades since a mainline entry in the Age of Empires franchise appeared on Apple systems. The original game, its two sequels, and Age of Mythology all received official OS X ports through MacSoft in the early 2000s, but Microsoft halted the porting process once newer remasters and installments began to surface.
For newcomers, the Definitive Edition delivers sweeping visual enhancements, refined controls, new game modes, full multiplayer support, and all the beloved historical campaigns from the original.
The base game already includes the Lords of the West, Dynasties of India, and Dawn of the Dukes expansions, each featuring unique campaigns and civilizations. Additionally, a wealth of downloadable content is available, offering further storylines and new factions for dedicated fans.
The latest iteration of the game, now Apple Silicon native, demands a minimum system requirement of macOS 15.7 or later, an Apple M1 or A18 Pro CPU with their integrated GPUs, 8GB of RAM, and at least 16GB of storage for installation. However, the question regarding crossplay compatibility between the macOS version and other platforms remains unanswered.
As of now, Age of Empires II: Definitive Edition is accessible for purchase on macOS through Steam and Feral Interactive’s store. A Mac App Store release is scheduled for later this year. Notably, those who already own the game on Steam can enjoy the new platform version at no additional cost.
