Donkey Kong 64 is finally coming to Switch Online’s N64 library next month

Donkey Kong 64’s iconic opening track, the DK Rap composed by Grant Kirkhope, has become a beloved fan favorite, debuting in the game’s intro and resonating with players for decades.

Although the title never appeared on the Wii’s Virtual Console, it did surface on the Wii U’s Virtual Console in 2015. With the Wii U’s modest sales, many Switch owners will now have their first legal opportunity to experience the classic since its original N64 release 27 years ago.

Analysis: This release expands the Switch’s library of classic titles, potentially boosting its appeal to nostalgic gamers and reinforcing Nintendo’s strategy of leveraging legacy IP to drive platform adoption.

Fans have long awaited the addition of Donkey Kong 64, a hope that intensified last July when a blurred segment of a Nintendo Switch Online trailer seemed to reveal the game’s box art alongside Forsaken 64, Glover, and Super Smash Bros.

While Forsaken 64 was subsequently added to the service—adding credibility to the rumors—Glover and Super Smash Bros remain absent from the lineup.

The upcoming inclusion of Donkey Kong 64 heralds the first new Nintendo 64 title to debut on the service this year, a notable milestone following last year’s five additions—Ridge Racer 64, Killer Instinct Gold, Forsaken 64, Rayman 2: The Great Escape, and Tonic Trouble.

Players can already access a broad spectrum of classic titles—including NES, SNES, Game Boy, and Game Boy Colour games—through the standard Switch Online subscription, priced at £3.49/€3.99/$3.99 for one month, £6.99/€7.99/$7.99 for three months, and £17.99/€19.99/$19.99 for a full year.

To unlock Nintendo 64, Game Boy Advance, and Sega Mega Drive/Genesis titles, subscribers must purchase the Switch Online Expansion Pack, which costs $49.99 / £34.99 / €39.99 annually.
