10 Billion Pokémon Cards Printed, Still Not Enough for Fans

bekir May 27, 2026 2 min read 4 views

The Pokémon Company has just released its latest annual report, and the numbers confirm what many have suspected: the franchise remains a juggernaut in the gaming world. According to the data, the total number of Pokémon Trading Card Game (TCG) cards in circulation has now surpassed 85 billion, with more than one‑tenth of that total produced in the past year alone.

By May 2025, the company had distributed a staggering 75 billion cards. That figure represents an additional 10 billion cards printed over the previous 12 months, largely driven by the highly sought‑after Scarlet & Violet – Prismatic Evolutions expansion, which was released in a multitude of boxed formats. The Pokémon TCG’s success is a reminder that the market for physical card games remains robust, even as digital titles continue to grow.

Analysis: The rapid increase in card production—doubling the total printed since 2021—signals sustained consumer demand and a resilient secondary market. For retailers, this surge underscores the need to manage inventory carefully to avoid shortages that fuel scalping and illicit activity.

When we look back to May 2021, the company had only 34.1 billion cards in circulation, roughly a year into the pandemic. In the five years that followed, the Pokémon TCG has printed more than twice that amount, yet the supply chain challenges remain acute. Fans still struggle to find new booster packs in mainstream retail outlets, often resorting to waiting in long lines or, alarmingly, turning to illegal channels to secure the latest releases.

In a recent statement, the Pokémon Company acknowledged that many collectors are struggling to secure new Pokémon Trading Card Game (TCG) releases because demand has surged to unprecedented levels. The company expressed regret over the frustration this has caused and confirmed that it is ramping up production to the fullest extent possible in order to meet the overwhelming interest.

Industry observers now question whether the Pokémon Company can sustainably manage this growing demand—or if a market correction will be necessary to deter scalpers and bring a more equitable purchasing experience back to the hobby. Speculation ranges from producing 15 billion cards to 20 billion, while some even suggest implementing ID checks on cardboard packs, a measure reportedly under consideration in Japan.
