PlayStation Announces Closure of Early PS5 Exclusive

Sony Interactive Entertainment has announced that it will soon discontinue its early PlayStation 5 exclusive, Destruction AllStars.

The vehicular combat title, crafted by British studio Lucid Games and launched in 2021, earned a mixed reception from critics.

On Tuesday, PlayStation revealed that the game has been removed from sale, its virtual currency has been withdrawn, and all multiplayer servers have been shut down.

Analysis: This decision underscores the industry's shift toward live‑service models, highlighting how titles that fail to sustain active player bases are increasingly phased out to free up resources for newer IPs.

Single‑player content will remain available to current owners until November 25, after which only the Arcade Mode challenges will stay playable.

Sony has confirmed that multiplayer functionality for Destruction AllStars will remain offline on PlayStation 5, citing unresolved technical challenges. The company thanked the community for its support and enthusiasm.

Originally slated as a $70 launch title for the PS5, the game was delayed and subsequently released as a free PlayStation Plus title for the first two months. After that introductory period, the game will be priced at $19.99 (US) / £17.99 (UK).

In a recent review, VGC noted that while the arena brawling is enjoyable and the satisfaction of crushing opponents is undeniable, the game falls short in providing compelling reasons to return. The well-crafted characters feel underutilized in a title that never fully explores their potential.
