Japanese publisher Capcom has issued a statement concerning a recent data breach that led to unauthorised access of nearly 12 million Capcom ID accounts.
Capcom ID is a free unified account system that grants access to online play in certain Capcom games, enables cross-platform play, and more. If you’ve played a Capcom game in the last five years or so, you will almost certainly have an account.

According to the company, a total of 11,774,247 accounts were affected, with email addresses being the main information accessed — along with account info like when they were created, when they were last used, and so on.
Of the above total, unauthorised password changes were made on 196 accounts.
Luckily, credit card information was not accessed, according to Capcom.
“Capcom has not confirmed any compromise of CAPCOM ID account login passwords originally set by customers themselves. However, the company has confirmed that passwords were changed without authorization on 196 accounts. The passwords associated with these accounts have already been reset, and the company continues to investigate the scope of any impact resulting from this incident.
Going forward, Capcom will notify customers affected by this incident. Credit card information was not included among the affected information.”
The company advises that customers can use their Capcom ID accounts with no issue. “However, there is a possibility that the affected information could be misused to send fraudulent emails or other communications impersonating Capcom or related parties,” it says.
If you haven’t already, now would probably be a good time to update and change your login details.
