I’ve been bench-testing my rig across a stack of competitive titles, and the frame-time consistency gap between DX12 Ultimate and Vulkan really gnaws at me. When you’re chasing framerates, that 1% low matters far more than peak averages. My first question is about the descriptor model—Vulkan’s explicit heap management versus DX12’s descriptor tables. In real tuning, how much of your low-overhead win comes from better CPU-side culling versus purely the descriptor system? I keep

Great topic to dig into. The real paradigm shift from DX11 to DX12/Vulkan wasn’t just about ray tracing or mesh shaders—it was about who owns the CPU-side state management. In the immediate-mode era, the driver was doing a ton of validation and state tracking per draw call, which created massive overhead on single-threaded CPU bottlenecks. DX12 and Vulkan both flipped this to an explicit model where you build command buffers/lists ahead of time and batch submissions, moving validation off the hot path
