The Treaty of the Straits, or the Treaty of Istanbul, was a secret agreement signed between the Triple Entente in March 1915 during World War I. According to the treaty, the Bosphorus and the Dardanelles, including the capital of the Ottoman Empire, Istanbul, were to be left to Russia.
The Treaty was signed to enter into force if Britain won the Battle of Gallipoli, but the treaty was not implemented due to the defeat of the war. In addition, the Treaty was announced to the public following the October Revolution in Russia in 1917, when the Bolsheviks took power and withdrew from the war, but the British and French parties denied the existence of such a treaty, claiming that it was fabricated by the Bolsheviks.
