Arc Raiders Surges To Multi-Month Player High After Long-Awaited Major Update Lands

Embark Studios’ live-service extraction shooter Arc Raiders is back near the top of Steam’s charts following a major update that fans have been waiting several months for. Released this week, the new content has pushed the game back into the upper echelons of both Steam’s best-sellers and most-played lists — reaching concurrent player figures it hasn’t seen since May.

The surge is being widely read as a vindication of Embark’s decision to shift its update schedule. After months away from major content drops, Arc Raiders has demonstrated that patience can pay off for both the studio and its community, with fresh numbers suggesting renewed interest in the free-to-play title across all platforms.

A Strong Return To The Top Of Steam

Among best sellers, Arc Raiders currently ranks fifth on Steam — behind this week’s other major releases, Star Wars: Galactic Racer and Gears of War: E-Day. Those titles launched earlier in the week, however, so their elevated positions may be partly a function of recency rather than sustained demand; Arc Raiders could well overtake them before the sales chart settles for the week.

The game’s new cosmetic DLC, the Frozen Trail Collector’s Set, is also performing strongly, currently sitting at eighth on the best-sellers list. Meanwhile, concurrent player counts have climbed past 106,000 — a level not reached since May and good for twelfth place among Steam’s most-played titles. The figure continued to rise during reporting, gaining roughly 5,000 additional players in a short window, hinting that the climb may continue throughout the day.

A Roadmap Reimagined

The timing of today’s update is no coincidence. In May, Embark announced it would move to a semi-annual cadence for major content updates — meaning two large drops per year rather than frequent smaller ones. The studio said the change was intended to give developers more time to build bigger, more ambitious experiences while also providing breathing room that supports a healthier work environment.

The Frozen Trail update is the first such release under that revised model, making today’s performance an early read on whether the strategy resonates with players. Arc Raiders never fully collapsed during its quieter period: it still averaged around 40,000 concurrent Steam players in September. But those figures were a fraction of the half-a-million-player averages seen over last holiday season, meaning the fall had been steep even if such peaks were unlikely to be sustained indefinitely.

The studio’s stated reasoning behind its roadmap shift — prioritizing larger updates and developer wellbeing over frequency — has now met with what appears to be tangible player enthusiasm. Whether that translates into long-term retention remains to be seen, but the immediate response is encouraging for a title navigating one of the most competitive corners of the live-service market.

Looking Ahead

The first day after an update can’t tell the whole story about whether Embark’s revised roadmap ultimately pays off. But by every available metric — sales position, concurrent players, and DLC traction — Arc Raiders is off to a strong start.

To capitalize on the momentum, the game will be free-to-play this weekend across all of its available platforms, offering a fresh opportunity for new and returning players alike to jump in while interest is running high. As the week progresses, all eyes will be on whether Arc Raiders can sustain its resurgence or whether today’s spike proves to be a temporary rebound.
