Timothy Zahn, the author widely regarded as one of the most influential figures in modern Star Wars history, is leaving the galaxy far, far away for a very different universe. Ahead of this week’s New York Comic Con, IDW Publishing announced that Zahn will write Timothy Zahn‘s first major entry into Star Trek., a graphic novel titled Star Trek: Roc’s Egg, with art by Ángel Hernández. The project, set aboard Deep Space 9 and scheduled for release in October 2027, marks a striking career pivot from one of science fiction’s most beloved franchises to its fiercest rival.

The announcement came as IDW revealed the creative team behind the upcoming title to The Nerdist. While Zahn has spent decades shaping what many consider the backbone of contemporary Star Wars storytelling, Hernández brings his own established credentials to the Trek side of the rivalry, having contributed art to a number of previous Star Trek comics. Together they are tasked with delivering a self-contained mystery that leans heavily on the station’s reputation as a crossroads for the galaxy’s most colorful characters.

A Murder Mystery Set on Deep Space 9

The official synopsis positions Roc’s Egg squarely within the golden age of Star Trek television, evoking the ensemble-driven intrigue that defined Deep Space Nine. According to IDW, a mysterious artifact known as a Roc’s Egg arrives on the station and is seemingly destroyed in transit, prompting a Federation JAG investigation. As the team digs deeper, they uncover a secret auction, a station crowded with wealthy collectors and dangerous criminals, an artifact that may not be what it appears, and “a murder waiting to happen.”

The premise is a natural fit for Zahn’s strengths. Long celebrated as a master of layered plotting and character-driven suspense, the author has spent his career building intricate mysteries where information is doled out in careful increments. The synopsis’ promise that “everyone has something to hide—and the truth may be more valuable than the treasure itself” suggests IDW intends to lean directly into those talents.

A Career Built on Revival

The significance of Zahn’s move extends well beyond a simple franchise switch. In the 1990s, when interest in Star Wars had waned considerably since the original trilogy concluded, Zahn launched his acclaimed Thrawn trilogy of novels. Those books are largely credited with reviving public enthusiasm for the sci-fi series and defining much of what would become the franchise’s expanded universe, with elements of his work eventually woven into current Star Wars canon. Alongside George Lucas, he stands as one of the most important names in the saga’s modern history.

The situation facing Strange New Worlds and its fellow series today bears a striking resemblance to the franchise Zahn once rescued. It is not currently a great time to be a Star Trek fan. Two shows are airing now, both set to conclude next year, which would mark the first time since 2017 that no Star Trek series airs on television. A film reboot is reportedly in development, but progress appears sluggish, leaving fans with little certainty about what comes next.

In many ways, hiring a talent like Zahn to tell new stories within the Star Trek universe represents exactly the kind of bold move that could reinvigorate enthusiasm during this lean period. Just as his novels gave audiences a reason to care when it seemed the franchise was fading, a compelling Deep Space 9 mystery could remind longtime Trekkies—and curious newcomers alike—why they fell in love with the original series in the first place.

Looking Ahead

Star Trek: Roc’s Egg is scheduled to hit shelves in October 2027, giving IDW ample time to build anticipation as it approaches New York Comic Con and beyond. As one of science fiction’s defining authors crosses over into uncharted territory for the first time, both fanbases will be watching closely to see whether the writer who helped save Star Wars can do the same for its galactic rival.
