As Destin Daniel Cretton’s Spider-Man: Brand New Day rolls into its home video release, a newly unveiled behind-the-scenes featurette is giving fans an unprecedented look at how one of 2026’s biggest films translated beloved comic book art onto the silver screen. Polygon has exclusively revealed “Live-Action Comics,” a special extra that documents how Cretton and stunt coordinator Peng Zhang painstakingly recreated iconic Marvel covers in live action, answering long-standing questions about the visual Easter eggs woven throughout the film.

The featurette arrives as Brand New Day continues its remarkable theatrical run. The superhero epic became the top domestic box-office hit in U.S. history and earned $2.5 billion globally, defying talk of genre fatigue with a gripping story anchored by popular Marvel heroes and a tragic portrayal of X-Men’s Jean Grey (Sadie Sink). Its 70-day theater stay preceded its debut on video-on-demand platforms on Oct. 6, with the full suite of special features also landing in physical releases set for Dec. 15.

The Comics That Shaped the Screen

In “Live-Action Comics,” viewers learn how Peter Parker (Tom Holland) opens the film by battling a roster of villains whose on-screen choreography was directly inspired by classic comic panels. His clash with Tombstone (Marvin Jones III) is built around the cover of the 1988 Spectacular Spider-Man comic by Gerry Conway and Sal Buscema, while his confrontation with Scorpion (Michael Mando) draws inspiration from Alex Saviuk’s artwork in the 1995 issue of Spider-Man Adventures.

To bring those images to life, Cretton reportedly produced giant printouts of the source material and mounted them on easels so he could brainstorm how to translate each frozen frame into moving picture. The resulting set pieces did not always land with gravity; one brawl ends with Spidey dispatching Scorpion by smacking him with a piano dragged from a nearby moving truck.

“What was fun about these comic book covers was looking at the image and then trying to imagine what happened before and after this snapshot.”

A Treasure Trove of Bonus Features

The physical release on Dec. 15 packages an extensive collection of extras alongside the film. Highlights include “Tom Holland: Evolving Spider-Man,” in which the star reflects on his evolving role both in front of and behind the camera, and “Brand New Direction,” where Cretton opens up about crafting a more mature take focused on complex themes. Fans can also explore “Secret Sources and Hidden Spider Eggs,” a deep dive into the secret references scattered throughout the Marvel universe.

The collection further examines the film’s practical craft through pieces like “Webs, Wires and Runaway Tanks,” where Peng Zhang details his approach to real-world spider stunts, and “Scorpions, Ninjas, and the Spider-Suit,” which follows the costume department as it reinvented the iconic suit. Additional features cover the villain’s mental powers in “Possession!”, the on-screen chemistry between Tom Holland and Jon Bernthal in “Peter and The Punisher”, and ensemble reflections from Zendaya, Sadie Sink, Mark Ruffalo, and Jacob Batalon under the banner “Friends and Foes.”

Pricing and Collector Editions

Sony has structured its home video offerings to appeal to both casual viewers and dedicated collectors. A standard DVD is priced at $25, while a 4K Blu-ray comes in at $45. For the most devoted fans, Sony is also offering a premium edition at $150.99 that features lenticular steelbook cover art, a “relic card” containing an actual piece of wardrobe from the film, an exclusive comic book, special art cards, and reproduced versions of Peter’s letter to MJ and MJ’s drawing of Peter and Ned.

All releases will include subtitles in English, English audio descriptions for the deaf and hard of hearing, French, and Spanish. As collectors weigh their options ahead of the Dec. 15 drop, the “Live-Action Comics” featurette stands as a compelling reminder that Brand New Day’s greatest trick may have been making comic book history feel alive again on screen.
