In July this year, IGN was invited to Rockstar North’s studio to play Grand Theft Auto 6 for the very first time, with Head of Development and Co-Studio Head Rob Nelson behind the controller. The exclusive 30-minute demo offered a rare glimpse into the systems shaping what is being billed as the biggest and most immersive entry in the series yet, and now Rockstar has effectively cleared the way for IGN to release the complete transcript of that conversation, following the extended Netflix look that debuted in August.

The interview captures Nelson walking through some of the game’s core ideas, from an evolved wanted system and a more nuanced approach to stealing vehicles, to how protagonists Jason and Lucia’s romantic relationship sits at the center of the experience. What makes this full conversation particularly valuable is that it was recorded while the game was actually being played, meaning the discussion frequently jumps around and describes what unfolds on-screen in real time, including moments when things did not go as planned.

A World That Acts Back

Nelson emphasized that one of the defining goals for GTA 6 is building a world that responds to the player rather than simply reacting to their every move. He contrasted this with earlier installments, where players were effectively all-powerful and only the police posed any real threat.

“The world will act upon you as well as you acting upon the world. I think in previous GTA games you were a bit all-powerful. You were the only one with an invisible arsenal hidden away. Apart from the police, everyone would run in terror from you if you started acting out. This world in GTA 6 is not like that.”

A significant portion of that ambition rests on the latest generation of hardware. Nelson explained that by taking advantage of increased memory, the team could give NPCs far greater height and body-shape differentiation than was previously possible, since different body types no longer have to share a single animation set. A new system now retargets animations on the fly so interactions line up correctly regardless of a character’s size.

The NPC interaction system itself returns from Red Dead Redemption 2 but pushes considerably further. Nelson described how Rockstar essentially built an entirely new team of writers, directors, and producers in Los Angeles to generate the sheer volume of believable dialogue required, noting that across technical, animation, design, and writing teams everyone had to become “students of human behavior.”

New Systems for a Couple on the Run

The demo showcased several mechanical shifts designed to give players more meaningful choices. The wanted system now requires either a witness or an triggered alarm before police are even notified, and heat is tracked based on what officers have actually seen you wear. Nelson demonstrated how changing your outfit, calling your personal vehicle for fresh clothes, or splitting up with Lucia can help shake off attention.

Vehicle theft has also been layered beyond the simple hotwire mechanic of previous games. Certain parked cars require specific tools such as a key cloner or slim-jim to access until players progress through the story, while vehicles may be fitted with alarms or advanced trackers that alert police if abandoned. A phone scanner lets players assess a vehicle’s security features and resale value.

Beneath these systems sits what Rockstar calls the Criminal Profile, a reputation mechanic distinct from Red Dead Redemption 2’s honor system, alongside a separate relationship tracker. Nelson stressed there is no single right way to play, but consistent unnecessary violence can shift how the world reacts to Jason and Lucia.

The Relationship at the Center

Perhaps the most notable departure for the series is that Jason and Lucia’s romance sits front-and-center throughout the story. Nelson insisted the relationship remains entirely optional in terms of gameplay benefit, with both characters always able to fight side by side regardless of how much players nurture their bond.

“When you bring them together, it feels like you’re a steward of their relationship, and you feel protective of them as a unit. But this is something we did not know when we started, and it really had to be something we felt our way through.”

Nelson also addressed physical intimacy directly, acknowledging that games have historically struggled with the subject. “Physical intimacy is a huge part of a relationship, and so it has to be done right,” he said, adding that Rockstar wanted to avoid ending up in “a kind of weird caricature version of it.” He confirmed the couple can hold hands, text each other at any time, and pursue everyday slice-of-life activities together.

Looking Ahead

The interview also touched on how Rockstar is balancing freedom with storytelling. Nelson said missions that can become systemic are designed to feel consistent with open-world play, while more scripted sequences still take precedence when needed to advance the narrative in a believable way. He pointed out that even early missions offer multiple escape routes and emergent possibilities.

Nelson described GTA 6 as a game built for players to revisit over long periods, much like Red Dead Redemption 2, with so much discoverable content hidden beyond map icons and objectives. With the team having doubled in size to handle the world’s density, he called it “a step forward in all respects,” citing the sheer scale of the population and fidelity of its responses.

“Even though there are some new systems at play, it’s still very much Grand Theft Auto,” Nelson said, framing the game as an evolution that retains the familiarity players expect while delivering what Rockstar hopes will be a deeply immersive world to get lost in.
