MARVEL Tōkon: Fighting Souls is set to expand its roster with a dramatic new addition, as producer Takeshi Yamanaka’s team unveiled today that Phoenix Cyclops will join the fighting game on November 2. The character marks the first downloadable content entry in the game’s Year 1 Pass and arrives alongside a gameplay trailer showcasing his unique blend of optic-based attacks and devastating cosmic power. Voiced by Ray Chase, Phoenix Cyclops merges the classic Optic Blast techniques long associated with Scott Summers with the apocalyptic might of the Phoenix Force, offering players a fresh take on one of Marvel’s most iconic mutants.
The November 2 launch also brings two additional costumes for the character—his “Classic” and “Legacy” DLC outfits—giving fans the option to experience the mutant leader in either his reinterpretated cosmic form or the familiar appearances they have come to know. In a move designed to capitalize on the hype, Capcom has announced that MARVEL Tōkon: Fighting Souls is receiving its first-ever sale on the PlayStation Store starting today, with the Ultimate Edition available at a discounted price for those looking to jump in before Cyclops arrives.
A New Interpretation of an Established Hero
Cyclops has appeared in numerous Marvel fighting games over the years, and his visual identity and battle style have become firmly established through that long history. According to Yamanaka, the development team wanted to push beyond what players had already seen rather than simply replicate a proven formula.

“Early in development, Cyclops was one of the leading candidates to join the roster as a member of the Unbreakable X-Men team. Because of his long history, we challenged ourselves to explore whether there was a way to present him in a style that felt different from what players had seen before. During those discussions, our narrative team proposed the idea of using the Phoenix version of Cyclops. We felt this interpretation would allow us to create fresher visuals and a more exciting fighting style while offering something unexpected for players.”

The producer noted that the team made “the difficult decision to continue working on the character until we felt like we were adding something new to his fighting game legacy,” ultimately settling on a version of Scott Summers who channels the Phoenix Force. This interpretation, he explained, is designed to convey both the character’s belief in absolute justice and the inner conflict that accompanies such immense power.

Designing the Fiery Corruption
The visual design deliberately contrasts Cyclops’ youthful appearance against the overwhelming aura of the Phoenix Force, illustrating his transformation from idealistic team leader into a figure of fiery corruption. While the overall costume remains faithful to its source material, the developers incorporated details and touches inspired by the comics throughout the process.
“Above all, our goal was simple: to make him look as cool as possible,” Yamanaka said, emphasizing that the character’s design captures a mutant who hopes to tame destructive power in order to save mutantkind from extinction. The team also acknowledged that fans often hold their own visions of how beloved characters should appear, which directly influenced the decision to offer classic-inspired costumes alongside the new cosmic version.
A Risky Power System at Its Core
In gameplay, Phoenix Cyclops is designed as an all-rounder who excels at both long-range combat and close-range strikes through his versatile use of Optic Blasts. Empowered by the Phoenix Force, he can unleash wide-area fire-based attacks that control large portions of the screen, combining projectiles, rushing attacks, throws, and setup tools into a fluid toolkit.
A central mechanic ties directly to Marvel’s Avengers vs. X-Men storyline: as players continue to use Optic Blasts, they accumulate Phoenix Force energy known as Solar Shards. Once four Solar Shards have been collected, Cyclops can transform into his Dark Phoenix form—a nod to the comic arc in which he became one of the Phoenix Five and absorbed the power of his teammates.

“Entering Dark Phoenix form grants a significant temporary power boost, but it also comes with risks, including health depletion,” Yamanaka explained. “The Phoenix Force is both an incredible source of power and a path to destruction. Successfully managing and controlling that power will be one of the keys to victory.”
Looking Ahead
For players eager to try Cyclops before his November 2 debut, PlayStation Plus subscribers can access a three-hour Game Trial starting today, while those attending EVO France from October 9-11 will have the opportunity to be among the first in the world to battle as the character at the MARVEL Tōkon: Fighting Souls booth.
“It’s hard to believe that nearly two months have passed since launch,” Yamanaka wrote, thanking the community for its continued support. “Thank you again for your continued support, and we look forward to sharing more with you soon.” With the first DLC wave arriving in early November alongside a discounted price point and free trial access, Capcom appears poised to draw both returning veterans and new players into MARVEL Tōkon: Fighting Souls’ expanding roster.
