The Witcher 3: Wild Hunt has gained a long-requested customization feature, allowing players to separate their character’s appearance from its statistical power. The transmogrification option—referred to in-game as “reforging”—was introduced with the release of The Witcher 3: Wild Hunt Remastered, enabling Geralt of Rivia to wear his most striking Toussaint robes while quietly benefiting from the superior stats of a Witcher School armor set.

To access this functionality, players must locate two specific craftsman stations in the base game. Ordinary armorers and blacksmiths will not cut it; only master-tier artisans can perform the reforging process that reshapes how equipment looks without altering its performance characteristics.

Finding Your Reforge Masters

The remaster added the ability to change the appearance of Geralt’s weapons and armor, meaning players are now free to equip pieces purely on their stats and then adjust their look to suit personal taste. If a griffin set happens to outperform your preferred gear but you would rather be seen in wolf school fashion, reforging lets you bridge that gap.

The only two masters who meet the requirement are Yoana, the master armorer, and Hattori, the master blacksmith. Regular “amateur” or “journeyman”-grade craftsmen simply lack the capability to handle transmogrification.

To unlock master armorer Yoana, players must complete the “Master Armorers” quest in Crow’s Perch, located in central Velen. Trusting Yoana is essential: once she and Fergus have finished crafting Geralt’s armor, he must agree to test it. Failing the “Master Armorers” quest will lock players out of her services entirely.

To unlock master blacksmith Hattori, complete the “Of Swords and Dumplings” quest in Novigrad. Players can learn about Hattori by questioning other blacksmiths or visiting the forge to obtain the quest. While there are no key choices that would permanently lock players out of her services, caution is advised—actions such as running away during a fight could trigger quest failure.

How Reforging Works in Practice

Once you have unlocked your craftsman, make sure the gear pieces you wish to modify are equipped. Speaking with Yoana or Hattori opens their respective “reforge” menu, where your current equipment appears in slots on the right and a comprehensive list of all Witcher 3 equipment pieces is displayed on the left.

Clicking any item from that list applies its appearance onto whatever gear you are currently wearing. Transmogrifying a single piece typically costs between 100 and 200 crowns, depending on the type of equipment involved, though it will never destroy the underlying gear. As long as players have the coin, they can change their look as often as they please.

To unlock a gear piece’s appearance for future use, you only need to obtain it once—you do not have to keep or carry it with you. However, there is an important caveat: equipment obtained before The Witcher 3: Wild Hunt Remastered update are not automatically unlocked in the reforge menu. If you stashed away extra pieces during your original playthrough, be sure to move them into your active inventory so their appearances become available.

Looking Ahead

The addition of transmogrification marks one of the most significant quality-of-life additions to The Witcher 3 since its debut, addressing a frequently requested feature that lets players personalize Geralt without compromising on effectiveness. With both master craftsmen now accessible through their respective quests in Velen and Novigrad, players who have not yet completed those storylines still have an incentive to revisit Crow’s Perch and Novigrad before they fall out of reach as the narrative progresses.

For those planning a fresh run or returning after the remaster update, securing Yoana and Hattori early ensures your wardrobe options remain open for the remainder of your adventure—letting you chase the best Witcher School stats while looking your finest along the way.
