HBO’s DC superhero series Lanterns has confirmed that a second season is already underway, though it remains without an official renewal. Co-creator Damon Lindelof revealed the update during a recent conversation with Collider, noting that writers are currently “working on ideating” for Season 2 while the project awaits a formal green light from HBO and DC Studios.

The comments arrive shortly after Lanterns concluded its debut season, leaving viewers hungry for answers about where the story goes next. While Lindelof stopped short of offering a firm commitment to additional episodes, his remarks suggest that key creatives at DC Studios are already working behind the scenes to bring another season into existence.

Ahead of an Official Renewal

With Season 1 now officially over and most of its central mysteries resolved, the primary question on fans’ minds has been exactly where Lanterns Season 2 stands. Lindelof was candid about his own uncertainty regarding how the DCU’s John Stewart, played by Aaron Pierre, and Hal Jordan, portrayed by Kyle Chandler, might evolve in future installments.

“I do not know anything about the creative,” he said of the upcoming season’s direction. “And I wouldn’t want to hamstring those writers in any way for what future storytelling mechanisms they could indulge in.” His comments underscore a deliberate effort to leave the door wide open for whatever narrative paths Season 2 may take.

The Controversy Around Hal Jordan

Fans who finished HBO’s first season know that Hal Jordan is definitively dead by the time the final episode’s credits roll. The death of the DC superhero icon—and all of the controversy surrounding it—was a topic Lindelof directly addressed as viewers await Season 2 confirmation.

“I can only tell you that everybody in the Season 1 room, inclusive of the writers who are working on ideating on Season 2, felt like even though we knew that it was going to be emotionally devastating and/or disappointing and maybe even frustrating, that the worst possible schmuck-baity thing that we could do is show you a pilot where Hal Jordan was definitively dead, and then try to walk it back,” he said.

In the eight episodes viewers have received so far, Hal Jordan’s final moments were spent arguing with Sheriff Kerry Kane, played by Kelly Macdonald, on the bleachers of a high school football field in Rushville, Nebraska. Ulrich Thomsen’s Sinestro did tease that he knows a way to bring Chandler’s fan-favorite character back from the grave, though given that his character appears to be just beginning his villainous ways, it remains difficult to take his offer to John Stewart at face value.

A Canvas for Green Lantern Lore

Lindelof emphasized that he genuinely does not know what the future holds, while also acknowledging that DC comics have a long history of playing with Green Lantern mythology. He pointed specifically to the character Parallax and Hal Jordan’s repeated returns from death within comic canon.

“Knowing what the comics have done with Parallax—and Hal, I think, has died at least three or four times over the course of the canon—I want to celebrate everything that Kyle did in his performance to get the audience to fall in love with Hal,” he said.

Lanterns has been surrounded by fan theories for weeks now. With knowledge that the DCU Green Lantern Corps will return in the future, those speculations will surely continue in the months and years ahead. Aaron Pierre is already confirmed to reprise his role as Earth’s new Green Lantern in the Superman sequel Man of Tomorrow when it premieres next year, though just how prominent his role will be—and how a potential Season 2 fits into the broader DCU—remains to be seen.

Looking Ahead

While Chandler’s Hal Jordan may be gone from the story, fans have still embraced what they’ve seen so far. Some viewers have even described his casting as a decision that rivals Robert Downey Jr.’s landmark turn as Iron Man, highlighting how strongly Chandler’s portrayal resonated with audiences.

As everyone waits to see whether Lanterns Season 2 is officially confirmed on its way, those interested can revisit the series through IGN’s review of the finale. Meanwhile, broader developments within DC Studios continue to unfold, including questions about how James Gunn and Peter Safran fit into a newly reorganized Warner Bros. and Paramount structure.

For now, Lanterns remains in that intriguing transitional phase: a season already taking shape at the creative level, yet still waiting for the official stamp of approval from HBO before it can move fully into production.
