Star Wars Boss Confirms Mortis Gods Will Test Ahsoka in Season 2

Lucasfilm co-chief creative officer Dave Filoni has confirmed that the highly anticipated second season of Ahsoka will introduce the formidable Mortis Gods, a move he openly acknowledges as “a challenge” for both the story and its production. The live-action series is scheduled to premiere on Disney Plus on Jan. 20, 2027, answering major questions raised by its first season, which debuted three years ago.

The Mortis Gods will play a central role in the lives of Ahsoka (Rosario Dawson) and her Mandalorian apprentice, Sabine Wren (Natasha Liu Bordizzo), who remain stranded on the planet Peridea in another galaxy. Fans who watched the first season’s finale will recall that statues of these deities—the Father, the Son, and the Daughter—were carved into the rock of Peridea, a strong hint that they would eventually enter the narrative.

A Test of Faith and Purpose

Filoni recently confirmed in an interview with Empire that the Mortis Gods will indeed appear, bringing significant challenges to Ahsoka’s second season. He framed their arrival as a profound moral and existential test for his protagonists rather than merely a display of spectacle.

“What we’re dealing with is: are you going to believe in this, or not? And what is the danger if it’s real? And how are you going to prioritize your goals here?”

The director continued by exploring the philosophical divide his characters will face. “What would a Jedi do, versus what would a regular person do? Those things come up through the course of the season,” he said, indicating that Ahsoka and her friends will be tested to their limits by the appearance of these cosmic entities.

The Origins of the Force

The Mortis Gods are deeply rooted in Star Wars lore, having first appeared in 2011 during The Clone Wars season 3. Their three-part arc—comprising episodes titled “Overlords,” “Altar of Mortis,” and “Ghosts of Mortis”—followed Anakin Skywalker, Ahsoka Tano, and Obi-Wan Kenobi as they discovered a mystical plane inhabited by three mythological manifestations of the Force.

The Son aligned with the dark side, the Daughter with the light side, and the Father represented the balance between them. It is heavily implied that these beings are the originators of the Force itself, making their introduction into live-action television an ambitious undertaking for Lucasfilm.

A Difficult Transition to Live-Action

Filoni admitted that translating such a lofty animated concept into live-action will not be easy. “It’s a challenge, I can tell you,” he told Empire. Reflecting on the original material, he added: “It was so surprising when George [Lucas] created these archetype god characters. What were we examining there in Clone Wars? What was the metaphor? A lot of it is about power, and what you do with power, and how you wield power. For a Jedi, I think it’s a natural story path to get into these questions.”

The transition from animation to live-action has not been without controversy. Filoni has faced criticism for his adaptations of The Clone Wars and Rebels, most notably regarding the portrayal of Hera Syndulla and the decision to title Ahsoka despite its heavy focus on the cast from Star Wars: Rebels.

Budget Concerns Loom Over Production

Ahsoka’s second season has faced difficulties from the outset, including production delays that have pushed back its original timeline. Perhaps more concerning for fans is the report that the new season will operate with an even smaller budget than its predecessor.

With imposing concepts like the Mortis Gods being introduced, there are growing worries that Ahsoka season 2 may lack the resources necessary to tackle such grand story elements effectively. Whether Filoni can overcome these obstacles remains to be seen when the series arrives in January, but anticipation continues to build among Star Wars audiences worldwide.
