Bruce Straley, the game director behind The Last of Us and several Uncharted titles, has criticized the modern blockbuster video game landscape as “boring,” arguing that today’s triple-A games lack the risk-taking needed to inject fresh ideas into the industry. Speaking in a recent interview with Edge magazine about the state of the games business, Straley acknowledged the extraordinary technical achievement behind contemporary blockbusters while admitting he feels little excitement for what actually happens on screen.

The comments touch directly on God of War Laufey, the highly anticipated sequel to 2018’s acclaimed soft reboot. Straley praised the game’s visual craftsmanship but said the gameplay itself failed to thrill him, using it as a broader example of where he believes the entire AAA sector has stalled.

A Praise Mixed With Disappointment

In his conversation with Edge magazine, Straley did not mince words about how he views contemporary blockbusters. He conceded that games like God of War Laufey represent a staggering level of skill and effort, yet argued the payoff in terms of innovation falls short.

“God of War Laufey, I look at that game, and every pixel is mindblowing. The amount of work and skill that’s gone into every single frame… I’ve made those kinds of games, and I’m still blown away. But when I actually look at what you’re doing in the game? I’m not excited. And that’s nothing against the God of War team. Just, across the board in triple-A, it feels like there’s no opportunity to inject fresh, innovative ideas.”

Bruce Straley

The distinction Straley draws is an important one. He is not dismissing the craftsmanship involved; rather, he is pointing at a perceived creative stagnation that has come to define much of the industry’s biggest releases.

An Ironic Legacy

The irony in Straley’s remarks is difficult to overlook. The cinematic, third-person action games dominating shelves today owe an enormous debt to his own work. Uncharted and The Last of Us essentially established the blueprint that countless modern blockbusters have followed ever since.

This influence is especially evident on PlayStation, where God of War itself has been compared to Straley’s creations. When the 2018 reboot arrived, some gamers jokingly dismissed it as a Kratos-led version of The Last of Us, highlighting just how deeply his design philosophy shaped an entire generation of games.

A Departure After Burnout

Straley left Naughty Dog in 2017, shortly after the release of Uncharted 4: A Thief’s End. He received special thanks in the credits of The Last of Us Part 2, though it remains unclear how much he contributed to that project, which spent nearly four years in development without his involvement.

His departure came amid extensive burnout from the demanding nature of AAA game production—a reality that has become increasingly common across an industry known for its crunch culture. That experience appears to have shaped his current perspective on what makes games worthwhile.

A New Chapter at Wildflower Interactive

Today, Straley is pursuing a very different path at his own studio, Wildflower Interactive. His first project there was announced at the 2025 Game Awards as Coven of the Chicken Foot, and it appears to mark a significant departure from his cinematic action work at Naughty Dog.

The title currently has no release date attached to it, leaving players to wonder whether Straley’s smaller-scale creative freedom will produce something that reignites his own enthusiasm for game design. For now, though, his candid assessment of the AAA landscape stands as a pointed reminder that even the architects of modern blockbusters can grow weary of the very formulas they helped popularize.
