BANDAI NAMCO Entertainment’s Ace Combat 8: Wings of Theve is set to launch on October 2, 2026 for PlayStation 5, and the development team has unveiled its first story trailer alongside confirmation that the fan-favorite Annihilation Battle mode will return in the flight-shooting series’ next installment. Revealed today, the trailer offers players a glimpse into the tranquil daily lives of the crew aboard the aircraft The Endurance as they navigate their time together amid an ongoing war.

The newly released footage introduces audiences to new threats facing the Federation of Central Usea (FCU), from fierce engagements against formidable enemy Sotoan ace squadrons to colossal superweapons capable of threatening entire nations. According to the developers, players will uncover what secrets lie ahead as they take on these dangers in Ace Combat 8: Wings of Theve.

A Head-to-Head Battle for the Skies

Dogfights have long been a hallmark of the Ace Combat series, and today’s trailer showcased an intense battle between Shadow 22, Leader of the Elite Sotoan Air Force Shadows Unit, and the Joker Flight led by the “Wings of Theve.” This confrontation sets the stage for the aerial conflicts players will encounter throughout the campaign.

Beyond the dogfights in the skies, players will also face numerous superweapons that dominate the ground or overwhelm distant horizons. It is up to each pilot to lead their squad to victory and save the Federation of Central Usea from these mounting threats.

A Fan-Favorite Mission Returns

In one standout mission, players are tasked with a counterattack against Sotoan forces, required to destroy every enemy and target in sight. This is where fans will have the opportunity to experience Annihilation Battle, a franchise mode beloved for its strategic depth.

The freedom of Annihilation Missions lies in their high degree of player agency within a set time limit. Players face key enemy facilities—including a solar power plant, an oil tank, an air base, and an ammo dump—while making use of supply lines to replenish weapons mid-mission. This allows pilots to devise their own strategies, deciding which enemies to take down and in what order, as well as when to return to the “return line” to reload.

“I believe this mission category best embodies the core pillar of the Ace Combat series: the player’s ability to eliminate enemies based on their own judgment.”

Manabu Shimomoto, Producer of Ace Combat 8: Wings of Theve

New Ways to Enjoy Annihilation Battles

The production team has introduced new mechanics to the Annihilation battles in this newest installment. Just like the large transport aircraft Podarge featured in previous trailers, players can enjoy chain destruction throughout these missions.

“For example, if you hit a flammable object—such as an oil tank at an enemy base—and cause an explosion, you can also cause a chain reaction that destroys surrounding buildings,” Shimomoto explained. Structures located near where downed enemy aircraft crash may also be destroyed, adding depth to the strategy regarding the order and timing of players’ attacks.

Formidable Foes Threatening the Federation

Beyond the Annihilation Mission, players will face numerous enemies and must evade their threats. Among the most notable is the Megafloat Fatsia, a marine megafacility situated off the west coast of the Republic of Sotoa. This artificial island serves as an arms factory for the Sotoan military and a supply station for landing invasions.

The Megafloat extends six kilometers in length with multiple layers, featuring a 2,000-meter runway on its top deck capable of accommodating even large transport aircraft. Its central block houses a power plant utilizing Sotoan cold fusion technology, harvesting deuterium from seawater to generate electricity for the various facilities. Surplus power is used to create fresh water via desalination and deliver it to the mainland through pipelines.

For defenses, each area is equipped with automated systems linked to multifunction radar. Weaponry includes CIWS, SAM batteries, and railguns linked in cooperative engagement capability (CEC) to defensive aircraft, allowing the Megafloat to attack targets over the horizon. UAVs patrol the structure as sensor nodes, expanding its defensive range to a 400 km radius.

Another formidable foe awaiting players is the Attack satellite Tonitrus Spear, a Sotoan satellite weapon based on a kinetic project conceived by Yuktobania during the Cold War as a strategic alternative to nuclear strikes. From a low-orbit platform at 500 km altitude, it employs mass and gravitational acceleration to launch dense metal rods using pure kinetic energy, destroying targets across a wide radius without radioactive fallout.

Looking Ahead

In addition to these formidable foes, players will encounter more unidentified enemies throughout the campaign mode. Developers encourage fans to discover what these other threats have in store as they prepare to take to the skies when Ace Combat 8: Wings of Theve launches on PS5 on October 2, 2026.
