RuneFest 2026 has wrapped up at Jagex’s annual celebration of its long-running fantasy MMORPG franchise, delivering a slate of announcements that spans the entire series. The biggest reveal came in the form of confirmation that a fourth RuneScape MMO is officially in development, while existing titles received major content roadmaps and new adaptations were unveiled for fans across every platform.

The two-day event showcased plans spanning 2026 through 2027, with Jagex using the occasion to both look toward the future of its flagship franchise and reinvigorate communities around its existing games. From a next-generation MMO built on Unreal Engine to a remastered edition marking a quarter-century milestone, the studio made clear it intends to push the brand forward while honoring its 25-year history.

RuneScape 4 Confirmed in Development

The most significant announcement of RuneFest 2026 was confirmation that a fourth RuneScape MMO is being built. Jagex has not officially named the project RuneScape 4, which remains its working title, but confirmed it is constructed on Unreal Engine and designed around the latest technology and design philosophy. The studio described the effort as sounding like what would be a next-generation RuneScape experience.

No release date was provided for the upcoming MMO, though Jagex shared a teaser trailer to give fans their first look at the project. The announcement follows years of speculation about where the franchise should head next and marks the most ambitious technical undertaking in the studio’s recent history.

The involvement of one of the internet’s most prominent gaming creators signals Jagex’s intent to reach new audiences beyond its existing player base as it builds toward the launch of RuneScape 4.

RuneScape Reignited Launches December 2

Jagex also unveiled RuneScape Reignited, a major update set to launch on December 2 that the studio called a “defining moment” for its flagship title. Designed to rekindle interest among lapsed players and excite existing fans, the update introduces a Remastered Journey and Adventure Guide, a fresh economy, and brand-new high scores.

To welcome players back, full Reignited Access will be available without membership between December 2 and 12. Additionally, the long-awaited Plugin API launches this month, giving players an early hands-on experience ahead of its official release. Jagex paired these changes with what it described as “the biggest roadmap in the game’s history,” outlining 2027 content that unfolds across three story arcs tied to long-running plotlines.

The roadmap includes Hoard of Dragons in January, offering a sequel to the popular Dragon Slayer quest; City of Gnomes, which continues the gnome storyline; and Secrets of Karamja, introducing a new endgame raid. Additional content features an Agility skill rework, new skilling and solo bosses, area expansions, and a new Grandmaster Quest.

Old School RuneScape Gets Major Roadmap

Old School RuneScape received its own updated roadmap, headlined by the long-awaited Golden Gates to Menaphos. Opening after two decades of anticipation, the content arrives alongside a suite of fan-demanded additions. The Fractured Archive, a new endgame raid, launches October 20, while Hardcore Worlds arrive November 4.

Looking ahead into next year, Old School RuneScape will continue its Fairytale questline, host Quest Month, release Dungeons of Gielinor, deliver a Mining and Smithing rework, and bring Chosen Commander along with the Tower of Xorphoros to players.

RuneScape: Dragonwilds Expands Its Universe

The recently released spinoff RuneScape: Dragonwilds received news of its Blood Crystal Saga and updated plans for 2027. The Luminance update, launching this December, serves as a prelude to the saga and introduces Elves into the game along with new elven-themed customization options for player characters and buildings, plus the Prayer skill.

The Blood Crystal Saga begins in early 2027 with Song of Rebellion, featuring enemies such as Moss Giants, Kebbits, and Implings. The update also brings the Hunter Skill, new areas to explore, quests, gear, and house decorations inspired by the classic RuneScape city of Prifddinas.

Jagex outlined quarterly updates introducing new skills like Hunter and Slayer, alongside monthly patches featuring side quests, weapons, decorations, and quality-of-life improvements. Official modding arrives on Dragonwilds in 2027 through a partnership with CurseForge, complete with dedicated creation tools and an in-game mod browser and installer available across all platforms including console.
