Blizzard Entertainment is set to launch one of the most ambitious and controversial character reworks in Overwatch’s decade-long history, transforming veteran damage hero Sombra into a support operative. The overhaul arrives with Season 5 on October 6, alongside a parallel rework for Roadhog and the introduction of a brand-new support hero named Doctrine.
The shift moves Sombra from her long-standing role as an aggressive flanker to a healing position, a change that has divided portions of the community. Some longtime players who specialized in the character have expressed disappointment at losing her damage-focused kit. However, Blizzard insists the redesign preserves the essence of the hacker they built over ten years.
A Rework That Wasn’t Originally Planned
Alec Dawson, associate game director for Overwatch, told Polygon that Sombra’s transition to support was not part of the studio’s original vision. According to Dawson, developers initially set out to evaluate what he called her “triangle of lethality”—her damage output, invisibility, and hacking capabilities—while keeping her signature personality intact.
“It’s been quite a long road to rework Sombra in particular. It wasn’t initially something we started with—the goal wasn’t to make Sombra support.”

Dawson explained that earlier iterations of the character remained within the damage category but failed to achieve the desired balance. Developers worried about sanding down too much of her edge during those attempts. The final version, he said, landed on a more aggressive design.

“Sombra, the soul of her, was really important to keep intact… I think the version the team came up with is actually really active, really aggressive. Sombra’s not going to be in the back just healing the whole time.”

New Abilities Designed for Aggressive Play
The redesign introduces a new ability called Hot Fix, which Dawson described as one of Sombra’s most game-changing additions. Functioning as a secondary fire that heals teammates for a large amount over twelve seconds, the skill allows her to support allies without remaining stationary.
Dawson noted that this capability could prove especially powerful when paired with dive-oriented heroes like Winston or Genji who push into enemy lines. He suggested the ability would shine in coordinated team environments while keeping Sombra relevant on the front lines rather than parked in the back.
“If you’re a Winston or a Genji that’s about to dive in, Hot Fix can be very, very powerful. So I think you’ll find Sombra is very fun to play in very coordinated environments too.”

The director acknowledged the change remains significant for players accustomed to her previous role. He noted that teammates will need to adjust their expectations as Sombra occupies a different position on the roster, but he expressed confidence that familiarity would eventually make the kit feel natural.
“It’ll still take some time for players to get used to… But I think once they understand her kit, they can play Sombra very similarly to how she’s played today in a lot of ways. It’ll start to click.”

Looking Ahead
Sombra’s support rework goes live on October 6 alongside another hero rework for Roadhog. As part of Season 5, players will get their hands on new support hero Doctrine.
