Hulu’s abrupt cancellation of its long-gestating Buffy the Vampire Slayer reboot has left one central question unanswered for good: whether Buffy Summers and Angel ever truly ended up together. The answer came not from a script or episode, but on stage at last night’s Emmy Awards, where Sarah Michelle Gellar reunited with David Boreanaz to present an award together.

The two former co-stars had been working toward a reunion for the modern revival of the cult fantasy drama, which reimagined Sunnydale and its young Slayer for a new generation. Instead of discussing that project’s future—now firmly in the past—the pair instead reflected on their characters and paid tribute to three cast members who have died over the past couple of years.

A Joke That Laid Bare a Bigger Disappointment

The moment arrived during their joint presentation, when Boreanaz recalled his long-standing belief that the show’s central pairing would ultimately be resolved. “You know Sarah, I always thought Buffy and Angel would end up together,” he said.

Gellar answered with a wry aside that drew laughter from the audience as they recognized its meaning. “Well, I guess we won’t find out,” she responded—a pointed nod to Hulu’s decision to scrap the series entirely.

14. “Chosen” (Season 7, Episode 21)<p>

Buffy's series finale featured a brawl to win it all, a Slayer squad showdown with the First Evil. Sacrifices were made as bodies fell in this final episode, all leading to a glorious victory for Buffy Summers, who'd become overwhelmed and weary thanks to her thankless world-saving destiny. 'Chosen' wasn't as strong a showing as series spin-off Angel's finale, with its Hail Mary efforts, but it still made for a strong finish, its pyrrhic triumph offering up more peace and optimism in the face of relentless darkness.

The exchange captured a broader frustration among fans. The reboot was envisioned as a soft reimagining of the original series, set in an updated Sunnydale with a new young Slayer at its center. Gellar had been deeply involved in early planning and was expected to appear as a recurring character, alongside guest turns from other alumni.

The Reboot That Never Got Off the Ground

Gellar herself would have anchored part of the revival’s story, with James Marsters—known for playing Spike—having previously said he anticipated appearing at some point, though likely not until a hypothetical second season. The unresolved love triangle between Buffy, Angel, and Spike had long been one of the franchise’s most debated elements.

The original pilot script, which has now partially leaked online, reportedly featured only a brief appearance by Gellar near the end of the episode. Her character appeared to be set up for an expanded role in later stories, though focusing on establishing its new cast made sense for a first installment. According to reports, Hulu balked at Buffy herself receiving just a single line and requested a redo that would give Gellar considerably more screen time.

“Before we move on to the award, David and I would like to acknowledge that it has been a tough two years for our beloved cast and crew. We feel very lucky to have known and worked with such amazing people.”

13. “Something Blue” (Season 4, Episode 9) <p>

A rather hilarious episode, 'Something Blue' offers up another Willow spell-gone-wrong, this time making every casual snarky thing she says become literally true. As Willow tries to climb out of her depressive shell in the wake of a break up, the Scooby Gang gets thrown into a tailspin as Giles loses his sight, Xander becomes an actual 'demon magnet,' and the Buffy/Spike ship gets kicked into high gear with an impromptu (magical) marriage proposal.

Sarah Michelle Gellar

Gellar had previously blamed the project’s demise on a single executive, claiming he boasted about never having been a Buffy fan. Reports suggest Hulu remains interested in attempting another reboot in a few years, though it seems unlikely she will be persuaded to return—meaning fans may simply have to wonder what could have been.

A Night of Remembrance

Beyond the cancellation jokes, the evening carried an emotional weight. Gellar used her time on stage to honor Anthony Head (Giles), Nicholas Brendon (Xander), and Michelle Trachtenberg (Dawn), all of whom have passed away recently.

The reunion between Gellar and Boreanaz drew warm reactions from viewers online, who appreciated both the nostalgia and the graceful way the pair acknowledged their late colleagues. For a franchise built on resilience against impossible odds, the farewell felt fitting—a reminder of what made the original series resonate with audiences for more than two decades.

Looking Ahead

With the reboot now officially dead, no canonical answer will ever be given to whether Buffy and Angel found their happy ending. Hulu’s reported interest in a future attempt offers little comfort to those attached to this particular cast or creative direction. Until then, the question of what could have been remains forever unresolved—another lingering mystery for fans to debate.
