Disney has publicly dismissed speculation that it is seeking to acquire Fortnite developer Epic Games, clarifying during a Bloomberg Live interview that no such acquisition talks are underway. Disney president and chief creative officer Dana Walden addressed the rumors directly, confirming that while the two companies maintain a robust partnership rooted in a $1.5 billion equity stake from 2024, an outright purchase is not part of the current strategy.

The comments came as responses to reporting suggesting Disney executives were quietly waiting for the right moment to fully buy out Epic Games. Walden made clear that while investment discussions did occur in the past, acquisition conversations are a separate matter entirely—and one the company has set aside for now.

“Those Are Not the Conversations We’re Having Right Now”

When asked by Bloomberg Live whether Disney had discussed expanding its relationship with Epic into a full acquisition, Walden was direct in her response. “Well, I think that it was pretty obvious that we had very serious conversations about an investment and an equity stake,” she said. “Those are not the conversations we’re having right now, but we have a great partnership and a number of launches coming up over the next two years that are going to demonstrate the value of this partnership.”

The relationship in question was established when Disney announced its $1.5 billion stake in Epic Games in early 2024—a move widely regarded as one of the most significant entries by a traditional entertainment studio into interactive media. The investment promised deep collaborations spanning Fortnite and other platforms, marking a major shift in how legacy content holders planned to reach younger audiences.

Rumors of a Deeper Merger Take Root

Despite Walden’s reassurances, speculation about the relationship has persisted. Tech reporter Alex Heath claimed in March 2026 that some Disney executives were “waiting for that moment” to commit fully to an acquisition. The narrative gained further traction in April when Bloomberg reported that Epic was developing an extraction shooter featuring Disney characters, with plans to launch in November 2026.

That report fueled speculation that the two companies might be laying groundwork for a more integrated venture than a simple licensing deal. Yet as October begins, no official mention of the unannounced project has surfaced, and Walden’s comments suggest Disney remains focused on its partnership model rather than ownership.

A Partnership Still Expanding

While an acquisition is clearly not in the cards, the Disney-Epic collaboration continues to deepen through a variety of high-profile integrations. Fans have already been treated to a Disneyland-exclusive Fortnite skin and officially licensed Star Wars minigames within the game, both serving as tangible examples of how the two entertainment giants are working together.

The community has reacted with interest to the ongoing relationship, particularly given Disney’s track record of successful cross-promotional events in Fortnite. Walden’s promise regarding “a number of launches” over the next few years indicates that enthusiasts should expect more collaborations well into the future, even if a full merger remains off the table.

Looking Ahead

As Disney and Epic Games continue to define their partnership, attention now turns to the slate of upcoming releases Walden referenced. With multiple launches promised over the next two years, the companies appear poised to demonstrate the value of their collaboration through concrete products rather than speculative mergers.

Whether those projects include the rumored extraction shooter or entirely new ventures remains unclear. For now, one thing is certain: despite persistent rumors, Disney has made its position clear that it is not pursuing an acquisition of Epic Games—at least not right now.
