When Gears of War: E-Day launched for early adopters yesterday through the Premium Edition, Premium Upgrade Edition, and Collector’s Edition, it arrived alongside a candid admission from developer The Coalition: several beloved franchise staples are conspicuously absent at launch. Legacy features such as Meat Shields, Chainsaw Duels, select weapons from past entries, and online utilities like Private Lobbies and leaderboards have been deferred, with the studio promising they may arrive post-launch or in its next title.

The announcement came timed with the game’s release, accompanied by an official statement acknowledging that players would notice these omissions. The Coalition explained that it deliberately built E-Day from the ground up to create a more unified experience across Campaign, PvE, and PvP modes, accepting that this ambitious approach meant not every fan-favourite feature could make the cut for day one.

A Ground-Up Rebuild

The studio’s reasoning centers on a fundamental restructuring of the game’s foundation. According to The Coalition, developers began E-Day with an empty hard drive, constructing the entire gameplay sandbox from scratch rather than building upon existing code and systems.

We started E-Day with an empty hard drive building our entire gameplay sandbox from scratch to ensure a more unified gameplay experience across Campaign, PvE and PvP. This new sandbox also allowed for innovation in cover, combat and enemies. The trade-off being that including every legacy feature from Gears of War was not possible for launch.

The Coalition

The studio emphasized that these deferred features are not permanently gone from the franchise. Its team is reportedly working to deliver what it describes as the strongest and most stable launch experience while carefully considering how and what to improve upon fan favourites, either after release or in future projects.

The Gnasher Shotgun Debate

Beyond the missing legacy modes, The Coalition also addressed community concerns surrounding the Gnasher shotgun, one of the franchise’s most iconic weapons. The studio insisted it wants the gun to remain “punchy, visceral and consistent every time you pull the trigger,” noting that aiming mechanics have evolved across the series but its core goals have not.

The developer explained that every Gears game has historically fired the Gnasher from the camera position when aiming with the left trigger, producing an accurate and predictable shot from the aim-down-sights view. According to The Coalition, this behaviour remains unchanged in E-Day, though it acknowledged making adjustments to how aiming works overall. Rather than committing firmly to a design direction, the studio signaled openness to player feedback, promising it will listen to what the community has to say about these changes.

A Complicated Moment for The Coalition

The timing of this “next title” remark carries particular weight given the current atmosphere at the studio. Given the mood at The Coalition and the very public, very controversial cuts that Microsoft is making across the Xbox division, it is striking to hear a developer speak so openly about future projects. Part of the most recent wave of layoffs saw E-Day’s story director, Juan Vaca, depart the studio, meaning any sequel would presumably take a different creative direction.

The Coalition has nonetheless received praise for the game itself. In my Gears of War: E-Day review I praised both the story and campaign quite substantially, suggesting that despite the missing features, the core experience resonated with critics even as it drew criticism from a segment of the fanbase.

Looking Ahead

E-Day’s first Season kicked off alongside the Early Access release yesterday and will remain live for eight weeks, running until 1st December. Ranked PvP modes are scheduled to arrive on 13th October, with the game’s general release following shortly after on 6th October.

The Coalition has made clear that its work is far from over, treating launch as merely the beginning of a longer development journey. Whether the studio can deliver on its promises regarding deferred features will depend heavily on community response and the studio’s ability to navigate an uncertain future within Microsoft’s Xbox division. E-Day appears to be performing well on both Steam and Xbox already, and the broader general release may provide additional momentum for The Coalition as it moves forward with its roadmap.
