The WoW: Forever Beta’s Dungeon XP Nerf Isn’t Nearly as Bad as It Seems

Blizzard Entertainment has quietly adjusted the experience point economy in the World of Warcraft: Forever beta, reducing the bonus XP granted by dungeon quests by 50%, though veteran players and developers suggest the change is far less punishing than a cursory skim of patch notes might imply. Announced on the game’s official forums this week as part of ongoing Beta discussions around leveling speed, the tweak recalibrates how quest rewards function inside instanced dungeons—changes that have already prompted debate among the community but little genuine cause for alarm.

The developer note, posted directly to the WoW forums, acknowledged player feedback on pacing. “We appreciate the feedback on leveling speed as we continue ongoing discussions about the Beta. As part of those discussions, we’ve decided to reduce the amount of XP granted from dungeon quests with this release. Certain quest rewards have also been recalibrated: Dungeon quests now reward 50% less extra experience beyond normal quest values,” Blizzard wrote.

Understanding What Actually Changed

The key detail that many readers missed is what exactly received the cut. Dungeons in WoW: Forever were already designed to grant considerably less experience from monster kills than their classic counterparts, compensating with massively improved XP rewards on dungeon-specific quests. The design intent was to encourage players to clear a dungeon once or twice to complete its quest chain, then leave it open for those who wish to grind for gear—while nudging the majority of players back into the broader open world.

The 50% reduction applies only to that bonus layer, not the base experience. Players still receive the foundational XP value carried over from classic WoW on top of a now-halved bonus. This distinction matters enormously for anyone worried about their leveling pace coming to a halt.

A Real-World Example

To illustrate the actual impact, community writer Harvey Randall walked through a concrete example using the Deviate Hides quest in the Wailing Caverns. In classic WoW, that quest awarded 1,600 XP. Before this patch to the Forever beta, it paid roughly 4,650 XP—about 3,050 more than its original value. Blizzard’s change trims half of that bonus, or approximately 1,525 XP.

Randall confirmed the math by turning in the quest live: he received 3,100 XP, which tracks closely with the developer’s stated formula, with a small discrepancy likely attributable to rounding. The takeaway is straightforward—these dungeon quests remain very much worth completing despite the reduction.

“Okay okay everyone, calm down—this one’s a bit of a lesson in the dangers of skimming patch notes… these dungeon quests are still very much worth doing. And for another thing, I do feel a duty of care to remind folks that this is a beta—all of this is up in the air and subject to change, and Blizzard’ll have a whole month to adjust things if it feels like crap.”

The reaction across the community has been one of measured relief once players understood the nuance. Many had reacted with a knee-jerk response before realizing that only the bonus portion was affected, leaving the base rewards intact. As Randall noted, he is comfortably sitting on two and a half levels from an earlier quest-hoarding session, undisturbed by the change.

Looking Ahead

Players should keep in mind that everything currently live in the Forever beta remains provisional. Blizzard has roughly a month to refine systems based on player feedback, meaning today’s numbers could shift again if the leveling curve proves too steep or too shallow. For now, dungeon content retains its role as an efficient and rewarding path through early progression—just perhaps not quite as explosive as it briefly became.

As the beta continues, developers are expected to keep monitoring pacing data closely. Anyone concerned about their current trajectory would be wise to focus on open-world content while dungeons remain a solid secondary option for gear rather than primary leveling fuel.
