Ubisoft’s Massive Entertainment Rebrand Makes the Name Much More Literal (and Slightly Confusing)

Ubisoft has rebranded Creative House 2 as Massive Entertainment, a move that gives one of the publisher’s most iconic studio names new meaning while creating some genuine confusion. The announcement, made earlier this week, consolidates nearly all of Ubisoft’s Tom Clancy-branded franchises under a single banner spanning development teams in Montreal, Paris, Sweden, and Toronto. In an odd twist for longtime fans, Massive Entertainment—the studio itself—will now exist within Massive Entertainment the creative house, meaning both names will share the same identity at different organizational levels.

The restructured arm of Ubisoft says it will continue to grow existing intellectual property while taking on new projects, including the upcoming March of Giants. The change formalizes a grouping that had already been operating with increasing coordination across multiple studios and cities, bringing together creative and technical expertise under one recognizable name.

A Name That Is Now Both Literal and Confusing

The confusion is easy to understand. Massive Entertainment has long referred to the Swedish studio founded in 1997, acquired by Vivendi in 2002, and eventually absorbed into Ubisoft following the 2008 merger between Activision and Vivendi. The developer became a reliable hitmaker for the publisher, assisting Ubisoft Montreal on major titles such as Assassin’s Creed Revelations and Far Cry 3 before developing two entries in The Division series.

Its most recent release was the divisive Star Wars Outlaws in 2024, and the studio is currently working on The Division 3. Now that name will also describe a broader creative house encompassing teams beyond Sweden. As one reader might note while scrolling through Ubisoft’s organizational structure, even the logo reflects the new emphasis.

“Starting today, development teams responsible for these franchises in Montréal, Paris, Sweden, and Toronto will operate under the Massive Entertainment brand, bringing together their creative and technology expertise to shape its future, grow these franchises and craft challenging experiences for dedicated player communities.”

Ubisoft

The statement signals that Ubisoft intends to lean heavily into a unified identity for what was previously a looser collection of studios. The Tom Clancy catalog—which historically included Rainbow Six, Ghost Recon, and other tactical shooters—will now be presented as part of a single creative house rather than spread across separate internal divisions.

Fitting Into Ubisoft’s Broader Restructuring

This rebranding follows the earlier creation of Creative House 1, known as Vantage Studios, in which Tencent owns a major stake. Vantage is responsible for Assassin’s Creed, Far Cry, and Tom Clancy’s Rainbow Six, among other properties. In total, Ubisoft now operates five creative houses alongside one creative network that provides production support across the various studios.

The broader restructuring has not been without friction. Earlier this year, Ubisoft teased that several new IP are in development, but cost-cutting measures have created a turbulent environment for staff. The company’s efforts to trim spending have resulted in the cancellation of games like the Prince of Persia: The Sands of Time remake, the shutdown of several Ubisoft studios, a return-to-office mandate, and numerous layoffs across the entire company.

The Massive Entertainment rebrand arrives against that backdrop, suggesting Ubisoft wants to project stability and creative focus even as it navigates difficult financial decisions. Consolidating franchises under recognizable brands may be intended to reassure players about continuity while streamlining development across multiple cities.

Looking Ahead

For now, the immediate priorities for the newly branded house are clear: grow established Tom Clancy and related franchises while pushing forward on new projects. The Division 3 remains a central focus for the Swedish studio at the heart of the operation, with March of Giants representing one of the newer ventures under the expanded umbrella.

Fans will be watching closely to see how Ubisoft communicates this layered structure going forward, especially as teams across four cities now share a single brand name. Whether the rebrand brings greater clarity or additional confusion remains to be seen, but it marks another significant shift in how Ubisoft organizes its sprawling studio network.
