Director Zach Cregger, the filmmaker behind the critically acclaimed and commercially successful Resident Evil movie, has unveiled his next project titled The Flood, a science fiction horror film set in deep space that stars Oscar winner Jennifer Lawrence. Announced this week through official statements reported by Variety and Dread Central, the film marks Cregger’s first venture into cosmic terror since his hit survival horror reboot, though he insists it shares no connection with the Halo franchise despite borrowing its namesake threat.

The Flood, a term well-known to gamers in Halo’s lore as a devastating alien parasite, has nothing to do with Microsoft’s popular video game series. Instead, Cregger is developing an original story that Dread Central described as “very Alien-esque,” centering on a deep-space ship captain who leads her crew in investigating a mysterious signal emanating from a distant world.

A Deep-Space Terror

According to the reports surrounding the project, the crew’s investigation ultimately leads them to an alien artifact that warps time, reality, and their own sanity, forcing them into a confrontation with what the description calls “an incomprehensible intelligence.” The premise places Cregger firmly within the tradition of claustrophobic space horror popularized by Ridley Scott’s 1979 classic Alien.

Cregger has long been known for guarding details about his films, and he revealed little beyond confirming that The Flood is a science fiction movie set in deep space. His restraint follows a pattern established during the marketing of his previous work, where minimal spoilers helped build anticipation around each release.

“Jennifer Lawrence is a one-of-a-kind talent and I couldn’t be more excited to work with her.”

Jennifer Lawrence Joins the Cast

Oscar-winning actress Jennifer Lawrence has officially signed on for The Flood, according to Variety, though her exact role remains undisclosed. She is expected to play the lead as the ship’s captain, a role that lands her in familiar territory. Lawrence previously starred in the 2016 science fiction film Passengers, where she played a character aboard a spaceship opposite Chris Pratt.

The addition of Lawrence brings considerable star power to the project. She earned her first Academy Award nomination for the 2010 drama Winter’s Bone and won an Oscar for her role in Silver Linings Playbook in 2012. She received further nominations for American Hustle and Joy, while also winning global recognition for portraying Katniss Everdeen across the Hunger Games film series.

A Strong Production Backing

Cregger is re-teaming with Warner Bros. and New Line Cinema for The Flood, following his success with the 2024 thriller Weapons at the studio. In addition to Warner Bros./New Line, he is collaborating with Steven Spielberg’s Amblin Entertainment and Roy Lee’s Vertigo Entertainment on the project. The combination of these established production companies signals significant studio confidence in the film’s potential.

Cregger expressed enthusiasm about partnering once again with the studios as well as joining forces with Lawrence, whose reputation precedes her. His public statement emphasized both his admiration for the actress and his excitement to bring the cosmic horror story to life on screen.

Looking Ahead

The announcement also addressed lingering questions about a possible Resident Evil sequel. Given that Cregger’s film earned strong reviews and substantial box office success, many fans expected another entry in the franchise. However, Cregger has made clear his intentions regarding future work.

“I’m doing this [Resident Evil], and that’s it for me. I’m not going to go tackle any other franchises,” he said, though he acknowledged possessing ideas for a potential sequel during earlier comments. Whether the studio pursues such an idea without Cregger remains uncertain as fans await official word.
