Microsoft has officially opened its disc-to-digital program to all Xbox One and Xbox Series X|S owners, following an initial rollout limited to Xbox Insiders. The feature lets players convert physical game licenses into digital ones, meaning the disc no longer needs to be inserted to prove ownership of a title. According to the company, the program now works across the full Xbox ecosystem, and Microsoft has outlined how it works alongside a few clever shortcuts for those looking to digitize large collections.
Until now, the ability to swap a physical disc for a digital license was available only to early testers. With the broader launch, anyone with a supported game can claim a digital version through a straightforward process that takes place directly on the console. The move positions Microsoft as it continues to nudge players toward digital libraries, though the program comes with notable caveats about which titles qualify.
How to claim your digital license
To claim a digital license for a supported Xbox game, players simply need to insert the disc into an Xbox console while signed in to their account. A notification will then confirm that the digital license has been received. One of the more convenient aspects of the feature is that it can be done on either an Xbox Series X or an Xbox One console, even when claiming Xbox Series X games, giving players flexibility in how they manage their libraries.
While the disc will automatically begin installing when inserted, that behavior can be disabled. Players can navigate to the Profile & system section in settings, then Devices & connections, where they will find an option for Disc. Unchecking “Play disc automatically” allows users to work through a stack of games more quickly, since the console will no longer spend time installing each title before the license is claimed.
With the disc inserted using this method, you’ll have to manually select the game card on the home screen, select it with the Menu button, and then claim the digital license. Once that’s done, you just eject the game and move on to the next one. When you’ve finished the process, re-check that “Play disc automatically” box for whenever you get your next physical game to play.
Xbox support guidance
By working through discs manually, players can claim licenses in bulk without waiting for each game to install. Once finished, simply re-enabling “Play disc automatically” restores the standard behavior for whenever a new physical game is played.
Which games are supported
Not every physical game qualifies for the program, and the main limiting factor is publisher support. If a license cannot be claimed, it is likely because the publisher does not participate in the initiative. Major companies such as Square Enix and Ubisoft don’t appear to support it yet, which could restrict the feature’s usefulness for players hoping to fully digitize their collections.
This partial support means the program is most valuable for owners of titles from participating publishers. Those hoping to convert an entire library may find that a meaningful portion of their discs remain ineligible, depending on the studios behind their games.
The program also preserves the ability to lend physical games to friends. Once a digital license has been claimed, the disc can still be shared, but the recipient will receive the digital license in the process. If the disc is returned, the original owner regains the license after re-inserting the game into their own system, maintaining the familiar back-and-forth of lending physical media.
