A Texas-based professional Pokémon player has gone viral after revealing he vomited at the 2026 Baltimore Regional Championships because of a fellow competitor’s foul odor, reigniting a broader conversation about personal hygiene at competitive gaming events. Donghun Youm, who claimed the VGC (Pokémon Video Championships) regional title, took to Twitter/X to plead with fellow competitors to maintain basic hygiene standards after he said a nearby player’s “putrid” stench forced him to lose his lunch and disrupted his peers’ ability to concentrate during a crucial round.

Youm’s post, which quickly spread across social media, detailed the incident at the Baltimore event, where he and several friends were reportedly unable to focus on their matches because of the overwhelming smell. According to Youm, the group even reported the situation to a tournament judge, though it remains unclear whether any action was taken against the player in question.

A Public Plea for Cleanliness

“I’ve had an incident at Baltimore regionals where I had to throw up due to a nearby player’s stench,” Youm wrote. “My friends and I couldn’t focus that round due to how putrid the smell was, and we even told a judge due to it. Like, c’mon man….”

The post drew a wave of support from fans who echoed Youm’s frustration, with many sharing their own experiences with poor hygiene at in-person gaming events. “[Washing] should be a requirement to attend an event,” one commenter wrote. “People who smell bad should be kicked out.” Another added, “If you can afford a Nintendo Switch, you can afford a $3 stick of deodorant dude.”

Hygiene Rules Already Exist Across the Scene

Hygiene concerns at gaming events are far from new, with similar incidents surfacing across multiple competitive scenes. In June, an Oregon card shop suspended its Yu-Gi-Oh tournaments after receiving negative reviews and multiple complaints about smelly patrons. The shop cited Konami’s own tournament guidelines, which require everyone at a Yu-Gi-Oh competition—not just players—to be “clean and wear clean clothing” or face potential penalties.

Pokémon maintains comparable standards through its official Play! Tournament Rules Handbook, which includes a dedicated section on hygiene. The handbook states that “individuals are also required to maintain a socially acceptable level of hygiene during the event,” noting that tournament organizers may permit a participant to update their personal hygiene and attire before returning to the venue. However, the rules are firm on enforcement: “If a participant refuses to comply with tournament staff’s requests, this is grounds for removal from the tournament and venue, and the participant must relinquish their badge to tournament staff.”

Looking Ahead

It remains unclear whether the player responsible for Youm’s discomfort faced any consequences at the Baltimore event. Regardless, the incident has prompted renewed calls within the Pokémon competitive community for players to take hygiene seriously, hoping to prevent similar situations at upcoming tournaments. As the VGC circuit heads toward its next wave of regional and national qualifiers, organizers and players alike may find themselves re-examining the standards that keep competitive spaces welcoming for everyone.
