In the latest episode of IGN’s IGN30 Icons interview series, Blade 2 director Guillermo del Toro opened up about why Marvel Studios’ long-gestating Blade reboot collapsed, blaming the project’s demise not on studio executive Kevin Feige but on something he considers far more fundamental: the irreplacable, unmistakable star power of original vampire hunter Wesley Snipes.
The film, first announced in 2019, endured a cascade of setbacks before being ultimately canceled. The frustration ran so deep that star Mahershala Ali — who trained for years across multiple martial arts disciplines to the point of blowing out his knee — walked away from the role entirely, later channeling his hard-won combat skills into Your Mother Your Mother Your Mother.
A Movie Star, Not a Toy
Del Toro, who directed the 2002 sequel, said that when he reflects on what went wrong, his answer comes down to Snipes himself. “I’m telling you — and I mean it because I know it — 50% of the ‘Blade-ness’ of Blade is Wesley Snipes,” he told IGN. “He is not the most linear actor to deal with, right?
