Bethesda’s co-lead designer on The Elder Scrolls V: Skyrim, Kurt Kuhlmann, has revealed that The Elder Scrolls Online is partly responsible for the game never receiving a Fallout: New Vegas-style spin-off. In a recent interview with FRVR, the 20-year studio veteran explained that the massively multiplayer online role-playing game effectively “took the heat off” Bethesda, keeping Elder Scrolls fans engaged while the studio moved on to other projects.
The comments shed light on why Skyrim, one of the most acclaimed and best-selling games of all time, never received the kind of standalone spin-off that Fallout 3 spawned with Fallout: New Vegas. According to Kuhlmann, the answer lies in the timing and success of The Elder Scrolls Online, which launched in 2014 and continuously generated new content for years.

“The Elder Scrolls Online took the heat off”
Kuhlmann noted that the Elder Scrolls series had always been defined by its single-player experience, but ESO fundamentally changed that dynamic. For a growing number of players, the online title became the primary way they interact with the franchise.
“I do think The Elder Scrolls Online took the heat off. There was a new Elder Scrolls product, and it was ongoing. It was creating new content constantly.”

The veteran developer continued by acknowledging that while dedicated single-player fans like himself remain a core part of the community, many others now associate the franchise entirely with its online counterpart.
“There are a lot of people… I mean, I know there are the single-player people, I’m one of those people – but there are a lot of people to whom The Elder Scrolls is now The Elder Scrolls Online. That’s their experience with it. That’s what they love. That’s where they got their Elder Scrolls gaming experience, and that’s probably what they want more of.”

A rivalry with Obsidian
Beyond the pull of ESO, Kuhlmann pointed to another factor that discouraged a New Vegas-style spin-off: Skyrim’s own overwhelming popularity and critical acclaim. That success, he suggested, helped fuel a perception of rivalry between Bethesda and Obsidian, the studio behind Fallout: New Vegas.
According to Kuhlmann, some fans and industry observers have long questioned which developer makes a superior Fallout game, with many arguing that Obsidian should be handed full control of the franchise.
“The whole New Vegas thing did create this – at least the perception of this – ‘Who makes a better Fallout game? Oh, they should just give it to Obsidian’ situation. There are the Obsidian, New Vegas people that think obviously New Vegas is way better, Obsidian is way better at making those games, and why don’t they just get Fallout altogether.”

The relationship between the two studios has shifted dramatically in recent months. Obsidian was recently confirmed to have started working on a new Fallout game in collaboration with Bethesda, following sweeping cuts across the Xbox division. Last week, another round of reorganization moved Obsidian fully under Bethesda’s purview, consolidating the studio’s place within the publisher’s broader structure.
The future of The Elder Scrolls Online
As for The Elder Scrolls Online itself, Kuhlmann’s comments arrive against a backdrop of uncertainty for the long-running title. The game’s development will continue, but severe cuts at its studio, Zenimax Online, mean the scope of future additions has changed considerably. Despite the reductions, Zenimax Online has continued to reassure fans that the game is not going away.
