Activision has announced that Call of Duty: Modern Warfare 4 will abandon the long-standing practice of real-time double XP token countdowns, replacing it with a system that only depletes tokens while players are actively inside a match. The studio confirmed the change on the eve of the game’s October 23 launch, marking the latest in a string of concessions aimed at winning back a community that has grown increasingly frustrated with how the yearly franchise treats its own reward mechanics.
A long-simmering grievance finally addressed
For years, activating a double XP token in Call of Duty has triggered an immediate countdown, regardless of whether the player was actually playing. Time spent idling, navigating menus, or simply taking a break would continue to drain the token, effectively wasting the reward the player had earned. The mechanic has been universally panned by the player base, who have repeatedly petitioned Activision to rethink it with each new annual release.
The frustration is not confined to Call of Duty alone. Rival franchise Battlefield has historically treated double XP tokens the same way, and its community has expressed similar irritation. Battlefield Studios recently compounded the problem by sending an in-game message promising to change the token system so it counts down in-match, only to retract the statement as an error twice.
At launch and beyond, double XP tokens will count down only when you’re actively in a match, not in real-world time. Existing tokens from previous COD titles or Warzone will also be usable in Modern Warfare 4.
Call of Duty, via X
The official Call of Duty X account delivered the news succinctly, confirming not only the new in-match countdown but also that tokens accrued from previous Call of Duty titles and Warzone will carry over and remain usable in Modern Warfare 4. That carryover provision represents an additional incentive for lapsed players to return to the series.
A broader push to reel in returning players
The double XP token adjustment arrives just days after Activision revealed a toggleable skin option for Call of Duty: Warzone, and it forms part of a wider pattern of player-friendly measures Activision has rolled out since Modern Warfare 4 was first revealed. The list includes a pre-order loyalty discount, developer updates clarifying the game’s matchmaking algorithm, and now this overhaul of the token system.
Most of these changes appear specifically designed to benefit longtime players who may have grown disillusioned with the franchise. By addressing some of the most persistent complaints around reward pacing and token waste, Activision seems intent on lowering the barrier for former fans to give Modern Warfare 4 another chance.
Looking ahead
Modern Warfare 4 is scheduled to release on 23rd October across PC, PS5, Xbox Series X/S, and Switch 2. With the launch imminent, Activision’s string of concessions suggests the studio is keen to open the game on a more player-friendly footing than in recent years, though whether these changes are enough to fully re-engage a skeptical community remains to be seen.
