Mojang is set to add the first brand-new dimension to Minecraft in more than 15 years, a move announced today during the studio’s live event. The Sift, an ethereal fourth dimension that first appeared in marketing for Minecraft Dungeons 2, is now confirmed to be arriving in the base game in 2027. The addition marks the first new playable realm since The End launched back in 2011, and it represents a deliberate departure from the hostile design that has defined the game’s other dimensions for over a decade.
For context, The End remains Minecraft’s most iconic extra realm, a sprawling dimension where players descend to confront the Ender Dragon in the game’s climactic endgame. The Nether, meanwhile, has long served as the game’s dangerous underworld of lava and aggressive mobs. The Sift, by contrast, is being pitched as something entirely different — a lush, vibrant ecosystem that the developers hope players could imagine living in. The concept was originally created to give Minecraft Dungeons 2 a fresh setting for its story, but Mojang has worked closely with the Dungeons team throughout development to determine whether the dimension could translate to the sandbox title.
A Peaceful Realm in a World of Evil
The defining philosophy behind The Sift is that it should feel distinct from the two dimensions players already know. According to Mans Olson, creative director of Minecraft Dungeons 2, the team was determined to avoid simply cloning the existing hostile environments.
“We wanted to make sure that it was different. That it doesn’t feel like the ones that already exist in the game.”

Unlike the Nether and The End, where the environment itself feels immediately threatening thanks to deadly hazards and aggressive mobs, The Sift is meant to evoke a sense of calm. Olson described the vision as a kind of alternate Overworld — a place that could feel peaceful, and even serene at times.
“We thought of it more as a, kind of, different Overworld … it’s this idea that it should be a place where you could see yourself living, a place that’s a bit peaceful, sometimes maybe even serene,” Olson explained. “We already have two dimensions that clearly scream, ‘I’m evil!'”

That does not mean The Sift will always be entirely safe. In Minecraft Dungeons 2, the dimension is under threat from the Illagers, leaving its ecosystem in danger. Olson acknowledged that the realm carries risk, but insisted the danger should never feel as imposing as the game’s darker dimensions.
“We wanted to make sure that, although it is dangerous, it doesn’t feel as hostile or as imposing as the Nether and The End,” Olson said. “But rather just be an ecosystem of its own, to be rich and lush and vibrant, and provide a new color palette that’s pretty different from what we’ve seen already.”

How Players Will Reach The Sift
Visually, The Sift is a striking landscape built from red and orange stone, green vegetation, sculk-like elements, and pools of a hazardous liquid the developers call icor. Access to the dimension differs between the two games. In Minecraft Dungeons 2, players enter The Sift through mysterious rifts that open across the Overworld. For vanilla Minecraft, however, the Ancient City portals appear to be the more likely entry point, giving players greater control over their own experience.
The collaboration between the two teams was intentional. Olson explained that the Dungeons team constantly considered whether elements could be reused, modified, or adapted for the vanilla game.
“When we do something new, we always look at, like, is there something there that we can reuse, or modify, or change that will suit the purpose? If there isn’t, the new thing that we do, could it be added to [vanilla] Minecraft?” Olson explained. “That doesn’t mean that it will or that it has to, but we want to make sure that everything could theoretically fit in there.”

While Minecraft Dungeons 2 features multiple new mobs in The Sift — including Sifters, Singers, Neesters, and Sprouts — it has not yet been confirmed which of these creatures will carry over into the base game.
Looking Ahead
The Sift will make its debut in Minecraft Dungeons 2, which launches on September 29, before eventually arriving in vanilla Minecraft in 2027. For now, the vanilla version remains a work in progress, with the exact scope of what will be included still to be determined. The announcement signals a new era for the sandbox title, one that expands the world beyond its long-standing pillars of fire and darkness into a realm that could finally offer players somewhere to call home.
As Mojang continues to refine the dimension, fans will be watching closely to see how The Sift evolves from a Dungeons 2 setting into a permanent fixture of the Minecraft experience.
