Blizzard Entertainment has opened the beta for World of Warcraft: Forever, a new iteration of the iconic MMORPG that fuses classic-era content with refined modern touches, in what the developer describes as an attempt to recapture the original game’s sense of wonder. The beta launched last week following the project’s reveal at this year’s BlizzCon, and players can currently progress their characters to level 20 on PC via Battle.net. A full release is scheduled for November 4, with the option to toggle between the enhanced visuals and the original look.
Forever builds on more than a decade of experiments with the franchise’s past. When World of Warcraft: Classic arrived in 2019, it rekindled interest in the title, and subsequent expansions like The Burning Crusade Classic and the experimental Season of Discovery further explored the classic formula. Those projects demonstrated both the appeal and the limitations of reworking the original game, setting the stage for Forever’s more ambitious approach. Rather than a full-scale overhaul in the style of Cataclysm, Blizzard has opted to refine and enhance what already exists, preserving beloved quests and dungeons while introducing new content and systems.
A New Zone, New Class, and New Race
The most visible changes in the beta come in the form of new content. Blizzard has introduced the Riverglades, a new zone built with what reviewers describe as organic environmental design, featuring ruined towns rooted in the original Warcraft RTS games and the coastal settlement of Farholde Keep. The Undead Paladins have also been added as a new class and race combination, integrated into the world’s politics rather than bolted on as a novelty. Their ambiguous position within The Forsaken mirrors the faction’s own uneasy standing in the broader Warcraft universe.
Perhaps the most contentious addition is the Skyborne race, whose visuals lean closer to modern WoW than to the classic aesthetic. This has sparked debate within the community, with some players questioning how faithful the new race feels to the original era. Blizzard has indicated it will handle such additions with care, balancing innovation against the expectations of the classic fanbase.

Mages can decipher a scroll that converts a rare sword from Shadowfang Keep into a Coldflame Saber, while a hidden passage from the Swamp of Sorrows offers an alternative route into Thousand Needles. These touches are designed to reward exploration and encourage players to linger in the world.
The enhanced lighting, fog, and water effects represent the visual side of this refinement, with the option to revert to the original appearance for those who prefer the nostalgic look. This dual approach is intended to satisfy both dogmatic classic purists and players eager to experience the game in a new light.
