Modern Warfare 4 Promises to End the Call of Duty ‘Clowny Skins’ Era With New Toggle and Pledge

September 24, 2026 · Gamer24H Editorial Team

Call of Duty players who have long braced themselves for the series’ most absurd cosmetic offerings can breathe a little easier, as Infinity Ward has confirmed that Call of Duty fans will finally get one of their most requested features — and no, it isn’t the removal of skill-based matchmaking. Call of Duty: Modern Warfare 4 will introduce a new Operator Skin toggle in its first season, letting players turn off the goofy skins they have complained about for years, while a companion “Carry Forward” feature will let them transfer previously earned and purchased content. The announcement arrives as Microsoft pushes hard to make the Oct. 23, 2026 release a commercial and critical hit after a string of disappointing entries.

The blog post announcing the news shows the feature in action and explains that when the switch is enabled, any skins from previous Call of Duty games will be replaced with the default operator look. Turning the toggle on disables the skins only for the individual player’s game, not for other players, and it remains off by default. There is, however, an important caveat: the change applies only to Call of Duty: Warzone, the franchise’s battle royale mode, and it will not affect any new skins added with Modern Warfare 4. For context, Warzone has appeared across several series entries, including Modern Warfare 2, Modern Warfare 3, Black Ops 6, and Black Ops 7, meaning the cosmetic decisions made in each title carry over and compound over time.

A Pledge to Keep the Skins Sane

While the toggle is limited to Warzone, Infinity Ward has already promised that Modern Warfare 4 won’t have “clowny” crossover skins. “No Lady Gaga. No Omni-Man. No Teletubbies. No SpongeBob. Keep the receipts,” the Call of Duty Community Teams account wrote on X. The studio’s tone suggests a genuine effort to distance the upcoming title from the franchise’s most infamous cosmetic missteps, even as the Warzone-only toggle acknowledges that the damage has already been done in past seasons.

Why Have Call of Duty Skins Become Controversial?

Over the last few games, Call of Duty has increasingly leaned into crossover skins, some of which are outright ridiculous: Godzilla, Gundam mechs, and Beavis and Butt-Head have been seen alongside celebrities like Kevin Durant and Nicki Minaj. Since these skins carry over with Warzone, the absurdity has compounded with every release. Previous titles made promises about avoiding silly skins only to break them shortly after, prompting Infinity Ward to go out of its way to distance itself from earlier games’ cosmetics. The pivot appears to be an attempt to appease the core fanbase, which has grown increasingly vocal about the direction of the franchise.

That frustration is not unfounded. Black Ops 7 was the most unpopular Call of Duty game in a long time, and the series’ parent company, Xbox, has been in a difficult position. Microsoft laid off more than 1,800 employees in recent months and is clearly desperate for Modern Warfare 4 to succeed, having already offered several open betas to bring in players while continuing its tradition of hiring famous actors to play villains — in this case, casting Mads Mikkelsen in a lead role.

Looking Ahead

The question now is whether Infinity Ward can hold the line on its “no clowny skins” pledge once Modern Warfare 4 launches on Oct. 23, 2026. The Operator Skin toggle and Carry Forward feature offer a pragmatic compromise for the Warzone community, but they do not fully resolve the underlying tension: the toggle only governs legacy content, and the franchise’s future cosmetic direction will ultimately be decided by the new skins shipped alongside the game. Fans will be watching closely to see if the studio’s promises translate into practice, and whether the pressure from a beleaguered parent company and a demanding fanbase is enough to keep the skins — and the franchise — grounded.
