Bungie’s Destiny 2 “Unvaulting” Revealed: Free Campaigns, Raids, and Destinations Returning — But No Regular Development

September 24, 2026 · Gamer24H Editorial Team

After a seismic announcement that effectively ended Destiny 2’s live-service era, Bungie has surprised the gaming community with details on a surprise “unvaulting” of beloved game content, revealing that campaigns, raids, and destinations removed from the game will return for free. The news emerged earlier this week amid a wave of uncertainty following the studio’s declaration of the end of Destiny 2 development and the mass layoffs that decimated its team. Now, drawing on new reporting from Forbes, fans are getting a clearer picture of what the unvaulting will include — and what it will not.

The unvaulting represents a meaningful gesture from Bungie toward its player base, even as the studio signals that it is not returning to the game’s regular development cycle. According to the information, every unvaulted addition will be made available to all players, including those who never originally owned the content. As the reporting notes, much of this material had already been transitioned to free-to-play before it was vaulted, meaning the return will not require players to spend a dime.

What’s Coming Back, and What Isn’t

While the campaigns, raids, and destinations are confirmed to return, the live-service seasons that ran alongside them will not. This is largely expected, given that seasons are inherently transient in nature. However, Destiny 2’s case carries a notable caveat: several of those seasons introduced story content that set up future expansions. That means players may encounter some gaps in the game’s ongoing narrative when the unvaulted material is reintroduced.

Seasonal events are likewise excluded from the unvaulting, primarily because the weapons they introduced are already available in the game. The absence of these events reflects a structural reality rather than a lack of goodwill. As the reporting explains, many players would welcome the return of seasonal content, but doing so would require a dedicated live-ops team — one that no longer exists following the layoffs.

There is also uncertainty surrounding the activities some seasons introduced. The report offers no indication that these will return, though it does not rule out the possibility of certain activities resurfacing as standalone experiences down the line. Players are also cautioned not to expect every Strike, Crucible, or Gambit map to make a comeback. However, the odds improve for Strikes that carry narrative weight, as those would be considered part of the game’s story.

“Monument of Triumph really was end-of-service for the live part of Destiny 2.” As you may recall, almost everyone managing Destiny was laid off.

The reporting reinforces what many suspected from Bungie’s original announcement: this unvaulting does not signal a return to routine Destiny 2 development. No further patches are expected to be released between now and the unvaulting, with the sole exception of updates addressing major bugs — as originally planned by the studio.

Looking Ahead

When the unvaulting will arrive remains uncertain. Forbes reporter Paul Tassi could not confirm a precise date, though their best estimate points to “sometime next year.” Until then, players should expect the Destiny 2 front to fall quiet once again.

That quiet is not total, however. A significant Marathon update is expected to arrive in December, offering players something to look forward to in the interim. For now, the community is left to digest the meaning of the unvaulting — a thoughtful return of core content paired with the sobering reality that Destiny 2’s live-service chapter has, for the time being, come to a close.
