Marvel’s Agents of SHIELD Star Chloe Bennet Still ‘Low-Key Angry’ Over Series’ Non-Canon Status

Chloe Bennet, the actress who portrayed Daisy Johnson — aka Skye and Quake — across all seven seasons of Marvel’s Agents of SHIELD, has publicly voiced her frustration that the long-running ABC series is not officially recognised as part of the Marvel Cinematic Universe’s canon. Speaking in a candid interview with Elle, the star described herself as “still low-key angry” that the show she helped launch is excluded from Marvel’s official timeline, while also confirming she would happily return to the role if the studio invited her back.

Bennet first took on the part of the young SHIELD agent in 2013, playing the character from her introduction through to her departure in 2020. The series originally launched as a spinoff of The Avengers, built around Clark Gregg’s Agent Phil Coulson, and was initially positioned as a direct extension of the films. Over time, however, the show drifted away from the wider cinematic saga, with its later seasons venturing into standalone territory that increasingly diverged from the movies’ own trajectory.

A Timeline That Left Agents of SHIELD Out

The series’ exact position within Marvel’s broader canon has long been a subject of debate among fans. Notably, Agents of SHIELD is absent from the Disney+ “MCU Complete Timeline” feature — the dedicated section that lists every canon film, television series and special. This exclusion stands in contrast to other Netflix-era shows, which have since been retroactively folded into the official canon, including 2015’s Daredevil. For Bennet and the cast, the omission feels like a slight against a show that laid crucial groundwork for the franchise.

“I’m still low-key angry that they don’t fully acknowledge this as canon — the real followers will understand that,” Bennet said. “We were the first MCU TV show, and we did 130-something hour-long episodes. We spent a lot of time in people’s homes, and I spent a lot of my life playing this character and this young woman growing into her power. There’s a lot of symbolism in that, especially looking back now.”

The show’s relationship to the films was once deliberately close, with Marvel seeding several early cameos to hint at the connection between the television series and the big screen. Samuel L. Jackson’s Nick Fury made an appearance in an early episode, while Hayley Atwell’s Peggy Carter popped up a couple of times. But as the cinematic slate expanded, later seasons moved into more self-contained storytelling — complete with alternate timelines, an alternate version of Clark Gregg and an incarnation of Ghost Rider that is almost certainly destined to be ignored once the Ryan Gosling-led film arrives. The series also never acknowledged the Snap/Blip, the pivotal event that reshaped the entire MCU.

Despite the frustration, Bennet made clear she has no hard feelings about the door closing. “I’m obsessed with Daisy. I feel like I am Daisy. I would be so protective of her,” the actress said. “I would love to play her with the growth that I’ve had since I’ve had a break from the role.” She added that she would “totally” accept an invitation to reprise the character should Marvel come calling.

Looking Ahead

Whether Agents of SHIELD will ever be referenced again in the cinematic universe remains uncertain. Bennet’s comments have reignited conversation among the show’s devoted fanbase about its legacy and the characters she helped bring to life. If the franchise’s next major chapter — potentially next year’s Avengers: Secret Wars — offers any reconciliation, it may well be the moment fans hope for. Until then, the cast’s contributions to the MCU’s television era remain a defining, if unofficial, part of the saga’s history.
