Blizzard Entertainment is facing a wave of job cuts that industry insiders say are “imminent,” according to Bloomberg’s Jason Schreier, just days after the studio hosted an announcement-heavy BlizzCon 2026 and ran what appears to have been an enormously popular beta for a new World of Warcraft: Forever. The reports arrive as Microsoft prepares a second round of layoffs across its Xbox division, casting a shadow over a franchise that has spent the past year unveiling a slate of ambitious new titles. The information comes from Schreier, a reporter who previously authored a detailed book chronicling Blizzard’s history through numerous contacts inside the company, during a recent episode of the 8-4 podcast.
Schreier confirmed the layoffs when answering a question from former Polygon journalist Mike McWhertor about whether Blizzard’s flood of BlizzCon reveals was a pre-emptive move to signal trouble ahead. The event saw the studio unveil Diablo 5, a new StarCraft open-world shooter, a fresh World of Warcraft game, a new Warcraft 3 campaign, and several smaller projects. Some of these titles carried release dates stretching as far as 2030, with Diablo 5 among the most distant. Yet Schreier was quick to dismiss the theory that the announcements were a cuts-related maneuver, insisting he believed Blizzard planned its BlizzCon showcase roughly a year in advance.
A Year of Planning, Not Panic
According to Schreier, the studio’s habit of scheduling reveals long before execution is what explains the seemingly optimistic calendar. “Pretty sure they were planning on announcing StarCraft there before Asha Sharma even took over,” he said, referring to the incoming leadership. He noted that Blizzard has always internally mapped out projects far ahead of public timelines, but simply chose not to share those targets with fans. “This is them saying we are going to actually ship when we say we’re going to ship rather than slipping,” he explained.
“Because one of the major things that has happened to Blizzard over the last few years, and one of the reasons they had so many problems with Activision, is that they promised that Diablo 4 and Overwatch 2 were both going to come out in certain timeframes and then both of those games kept slipping, which led to Bobby Kotick cracking the whip, cutting costs there, causing them all sorts of problems. So I think this is them trying to enact some discipline there.”

The framing suggests a studio attempting to restore credibility after years of missed deadlines. Schreier also pointed to new Blizzard president Johanna Faries, whom he believes holds “a lot of autonomy on this stuff,” and stressed that the BlizzCon slate was not a Microsoft-level decision. “I don’t think this was because of [impending cuts],” he added. “The layoffs started in July, people found out about them in June; all this BlizzCon stuff was prepared way before that.”
A Second Wave of Xbox Cuts Looms
Regardless of Blizzard’s internal planning, the timing of Schreier’s comments is amplified by fresh reports that a second wave of Xbox layoffs is expected this week. Microsoft earlier this year announced its intention to cut 3200 jobs from the Xbox division, immediately eliminating 1600 roles and earmarking another 1600 to follow. During the first round, Blizzard appeared to emerge largely unscathed and was even cited as Xbox’s “top performing” studio in the aftermath. That reputation may not hold, however, as the parent company tightens its belt and the studio’s most distant commitments come under renewed scrutiny.
Looking Ahead
For now, the future of Blizzard’s pipeline remains uncertain, even as the studio publicly projects a robust roadmap of new games. If the reported layoffs materialize, they could reshape development timelines and staffing across the franchise, potentially affecting everything from Diablo 5’s distant 2030 target to the near-term World of Warcraft: Forever beta that drew such strong early interest. Until Microsoft and Blizzard confirm any specifics, the announcements of BlizzCon 2026 stand as both a celebration of the studio’s ambitions and a reminder of the pressures that continue to shape its place within the Xbox ecosystem.
