Speaking to podcast host Brandon Davis, the Gilmore Girls legend revealed that he has made the decision to depart the franchise after recently turning 50, citing the physical toll the character’s signature “catcher’s crouch” has taken on his feet and ankles. While Bradley Cooper continues to dub Rocket’s voice in post-production, Gunn has confirmed that he can no longer provide the performance capture that brings the CGI character to life on set.

Gunn, who also portrayed Kraglin O’Bannon, the Ravager who ultimately earns his place as a fully paid-up member of the team, explained that the physical demands of the role have accumulated over the years. “Everyone thinks it’s my knees but it’s really my feet and my ankles,” Gunn said, describing the physical difficulty he has faced after portraying Rocket Raccoon. “Because I’m in a catcher’s crouch and I’m pivoting a lot on my points of contact with the ground… I’m doing a lot of pivoting in my ankles and feet. And over the years I think it had a little bit of an effect on my physiology.”

“My knees are fine but since I turned 50 a couple of years ago I am retired from Rocket,” he admitted. “Not that they’ve called but if they did, I don’t think I could do the motion reference for Rocket anymore. I’m too old.”

It is worth noting that Gunn’s departure does not diminish Rocket’s presence in the franchise, as Cooper’s post-production voice work ensures the character remains fully voiced even without Gunn’s physical performance. The actor has framed his exit with characteristic humor, acknowledging that his age—rather than any creative decision—has driven the change.
