Star Wars Zero Company Crosses 1 Million Sales, But Can the Furloughed Team Be Reinstated?

September 24, 2026 · Gamer24H Editorial Team

Bit Reactor’s Star Wars Zero Company, the XCOM-like turn-based tactics game that launched on Steam on 28th August, has reportedly sold more than 1 million copies, according to estimates from industry analyst Alinea Analytics. The milestone is a genuine commercial achievement, but it carries particular weight given that “most” of the studio’s development team was furloughed without pay in the run-up to release. The sales figure now raises a pointed question about whether the studio’s owners will reinstate and compensate the team using the revenue the game has generated.

The game’s commercial performance has been dominated by PC, with Steam accounting for a commanding 69.9 percent of copies sold. PlayStation followed with 19.9 percent of the total, while Xbox platforms — including copies sold through Xbox on PC — made up the remaining 10.2 percent. Alinea’s Rhys Elliott estimated that Zero Company generated roughly $50 million (~£37 million) in revenue since its launch, a sum he described as “respectable for this genre and during such a crowded period (even with the Star Wars brand attached).”

A Crowded Market, a Strong Brand

While the game underperformed on console in terms of pure copy count, it nonetheless earned more money per unit on those platforms. As Elliott noted, “Console players pay more per copy,” which helped offset the lower sales volume. The audience breakdown tells a similar story of Western appeal: the overwhelming majority of Zero Company’s players — 90 percent — are split between North America and Europe, with only five percent located in Asia. This distribution may well reflect the global reach of the Star Wars franchise itself.

By crossing the million-copy threshold, Zero Company has also secured a place among the top-five-earning games of 2026 based on a major intellectual property. The biggest earner by a considerable margin is the James Bond title 007 First Light, which has reportedly generated $309.8 million (~£233 million). Zero Company is the latest of several recently-released games to clear the million-sales mark, joining The Blood of Dawnwalker and Onimusha: Way of the Sword, both of which launched around the same time and have each sold over a million copies.

The Furloughed Team and the Revenue Question

What makes this milestone especially significant is the circumstances surrounding the game’s release. The studio’s development team was reportedly furloughed without pay before launch, a move that followed a dispute between Bit Reactor’s owners as well as a shortage of funds. The game’s commercial success now puts the studio in a position to potentially recoup those costs and, crucially, to reinstate and pay the team from the revenue the title has produced.

For a studio that faced such uncertainty, the milestone offers a rare opportunity to reward the very people who built the game under difficult conditions. Whether Bit Reactor will choose to act on it remains to be seen, but the sales figures provide a clear financial foundation for doing so.

“Star Wars Zero Company understands that Star Wars games should feel less like the movies and more like the toys.”

The sentiment behind the quote captures a defining strength of the game: its willingness to lean into the tactile, collectible appeal of the Star Wars universe rather than merely replicating the cinematic experience. This design philosophy appears to have resonated with players, contributing to the strong reception the title has received since launch.

Looking Ahead

As the community digests the sales figures, attention will naturally turn to how Bit Reactor responds to its commercial success and whether it will reinstate the furloughed team. The studio’s owners will face the difficult task of balancing their own interests with the well-being of the developers who created the game under financial strain.

Meanwhile, players can expect continued engagement with the title, including upcoming patches and post-launch support. For now, Star Wars Zero Company stands as a notable success story — a proof of concept that a well-executed tactics game backed by a beloved franchise can thrive even in one of the most competitive periods of the year. The question of who benefits from that success, however, remains the story to watch.
