Baldur’s Gate 3 Gets a Whole New Region in Act 2 — 30+ Fights, 70+ Items, Two Years in the Making

September 24, 2026 · Gamer24H Editorial Team

A solo modder has nearly two years of work to spare for fans of Baldur’s Gate 3’s middle act, debuting a massive expansion that injects an entirely new region into the game’s second act. SquallyDaBeanz’s “Act Two Expansion” drops the Chionthar Wilds into the gap between the Shadow-Cursed Lands and the city of Baldur’s Gate proper, giving the notoriously linear stretch of the map an open frontier to explore instead of the usual warp straight into Act 3. The mod, which is still in beta, packs in new quests, dungeons, NPCs, cutscenes, custom creatures with their own stat blocks, more than 70 new items, and over 30 combat encounters — all built for adventuring parties between levels eight and ten.

For context, the modder describes the new zone as “similar in scope to the Act 1 wilderness,” a comparison that carries real weight given how long that region tends to consume a typical playthrough. Act 1 is famous for swallowing 30-plus hours before players even reach the Underdark or Mountain Pass detours, and the Chionthar Wilds aims to deliver a comparable sense of scale and discovery to the game’s quieter middle section.

A River Forgotten by the Main Quest

The expansion’s setting is rooted in Forgotten Realms lore. In that world, the Chionthar is a waterway running through the Sword Coast toward Baldur’s Gate, serving for centuries as the region’s main trade artery. Barges loaded with casked wine, salted pork, and spices have carried goods between Baldur’s Gate and inland cities, and control over the river’s mouth has been a flashpoint of tension for generations. With the Absolute’s army on the march, the game’s logic holds up: Tav and the crew plausibly need a way to cross the river en route to Rivington rather than simply strolling there.

That narrative justification is what makes the mod feel less like a random content dump and more like a natural extension of the world. As the modder put it, players will find “less of the polished, fully-voiced spectacle of the game’s own Act 2 and more the sense of stumbling into a stretch of Faerûn that both time and the main quest forgot to touch.”

“similar in scope to the Act 1 wilderness.”

SquallyDaBeanz

That ambition is significant for a solo project, and the modder backs the claim with tangible content rather than marketing fluff. The Chionthar Wilds introduces new NPCs, a new war camp, and a full stretch of wilderness that replaces the standard bridge-to-Baldur’s-Gate transition. Players who prefer to skip the journey can opt for a Quickstart feature that spawns a fresh party inside the Wilds with gear, XP, and hirelings already in hand, or pull a spell scroll from the tutorial chest on the Nautiloid to unlock a waypoint straight to the region from the very beginning of a new game.

How to Access the Wilds

Getting into the Chionthar Wilds is straightforward, both in-game and out of it. Players drop the .pak file from Nexus Mods into their mod folder, then enable it through the in-game Mod Manager — a process that takes only a few minutes. Once the game is booted, the party simply walks out of the Shadow-Cursed Lands across the bridge toward Baldur’s Gate. Where the road used to lead directly into Act 3, the path now opens into unfamiliar wilderness, complete with new encounters and a fresh slice of the map to lose oneself in.

It is worth noting that the expansion is still in beta and may exhibit the rough edges that implies. Its choices and content are deliberately contained to their zone, meaning the mod does not ripple forward into Act 3. It functions as an insulated add-on, easily skippable in much the same way the game’s technically optional Underdark route is.

Looking Ahead

Despite its insulated design, the Chionthar Wilds taps into something Baldur’s Gate 3 has always rewarded: the freedom to get lost somewhere the story did not strictly require you to go. For players who found Act 2 too tight or too linear, this expansion offers a breathing room of exploration that mirrors the sprawl of Act 3 without sacrificing the moodier, more focused tone that many consider the act’s best stretch. As the mod matures out of beta, the question is whether SquallyDaBeanz will continue to expand the Wilds or leave it as a self-contained detour — either way, the Sword Coast has just gained a new frontier to wander.

For those interested in the full scope of the project, the mod’s Nexus Mods page hosts both the downloadable files and a look at the new region’s layout, including a map showing how the Chionthar Wilds slots into the broader geography of the game.
