Former Halo Devs Mourn Activision Takeover As Xbox Shuts Down Halo Studios In Brutal Layoff Wave

September 23, 2026 · Gamer24H Editorial Team

Microsoft’s Xbox division delivered another jarring blow to the gaming industry yesterday, announcing a fresh round of layoffs and sweeping structural changes under its ongoing “reset” plan that will see the storied Halo franchise move from longtime steward Halo Studios to Activision. In a memo released Tuesday, Xbox executive Matt Booty confirmed the company was cutting more than 250 additional jobs, with a significant share landing at Halo Studios — the very studio that spent years shaping one of gaming’s most iconic series. Among the casualties were veteran Halo developers, including at least one employee who had been promoted just the day before. In the wake of the announcement, a wave of former Halo staff took to social media to express their grief, frustration, and disbelief over the fate of the studio they helped build.

The decision marks a decisive shift in how Microsoft intends to run its flagship shooter. Per Booty’s memo, Halo Studios will no longer be developing the next mainline Halo game. Instead, a newly formed team within Activision will take the reins of the franchise’s creative direction, leaving the diminished remains of Halo Studios to function as a support studio — one whose primary role appears to be keeping the servers online until Xbox decides the unit has served its purpose long enough to be quietly closed down.

A Franchise Handed Off to a New Owner

The move represents more than a personnel shakeup; it signals a fundamental realignment of who controls the Halo brand. For years, Halo Studios — formerly known as 343 Industries — was the creative heart of the franchise, responsible for titles that defined a generation of console gaming. Now, that mantle is being transferred to Activision, the publisher that acquired the Halo IP in the first place, effectively returning the franchise to the corporate entity that owns it.

For the developers who spent years pouring their craft into the series, the news was devastating. Many had gone on to pursue other projects, only to be pulled back by the shock of seeing the studio that defined their careers dismantled.

“After spending 4+ years with the Halo team and seeing their passion for the franchise and love for the game and fans, it is absolutely brutal to see that studio reduced to a shell that’s only there to keep the servers turned on (until such time as Xbox decides they’ve been on long enough and closes down the last remnants).”

Brad Hilderbrand, former Halo senior PR manager

Hilderbrand, who left Electronic Arts specifically to work on Halo — what he described as “the crown jewel of Xbox and one of the most storied gaming franchises of all time” — said he was left feeling both sad and enraged. “To see that jewel being functionally thrown in the garbage hurts a lot,” he wrote. “My heart goes out to the now-former Halo team… All of you are incredible talents, you didn’t deserve this, and it absolutely sucks.”

The emotional toll was echoed across the community. Former Halo executive producer Kiki Wolfkill posted on LinkedIn that she was “gutted to hear the news today,” sending love and support to everyone impacted and acknowledging how deeply the layoffs could affect individuals, families, and teams. Longtime Halo boss Bonnie Ross said it was “difficult to wake up to the news” that the studio had been “essentially shut down,” praising the creatives, designers, engineers, producers, artists, and community leaders who had poured their passion into the franchise.

Former Halo art director Horia Dociu took a simpler, more personal approach, sending good vibes to his former colleagues and friends. “With the level of talent in that building, and how hard everyone’s been working, it’s just heartbreaking to hear,” he wrote. Meanwhile, Marcus Lehto, a veteran of the industry, described himself as “shocked but not entirely surprised” by the closure, wishing the best for the affected developers.

Looking Ahead

As the dust settles, the industry watches closely to see how the Activision-led team will approach the franchise’s future. The transition raises questions about the creative direction of Halo moving forward, the fate of the remaining support studio, and whether the broader Xbox Game Studios division will continue to shrink under the reset plan. For the developers who lost their jobs, the uncertainty extends beyond the studio itself — Hilderbrand, for instance, cautioned that he could not promise the industry’s current instability would land everyone on their feet.

Regardless of the outcome, the outpouring of support from former Halo staff underscores how deeply the community values the people behind the games. As the franchise moves into a new era under Activision, the legacy of Halo Studios — and the talent it cultivated — remains a poignant reminder of what was lost in the name of corporate restructuring.
