Discord Brings Back Age Verification With Privacy-Focused Approach After Loud Backlash

Discord has relaunched its controversial age-verification system, this time promising a privacy-preserving design that avoids requiring users to submit biometric data or government-issued identification. The plan, first announced earlier this year, had been delayed back in February after intense community backlash, but co-founder and chief technology officer Stanislav Vishnevskiy says the updated rollout will give users meaningful options. The changes are being deployed across the platform over the course of this week, marking a significant shift in how the voice and text chat service handles teen safety amid a wave of expanding global legislation.

The original proposal would have automatically assigned every user a “teen-appropriate experience,” blurring potentially sensitive content or restricting access to age-gated channels. Removing those blocks under the earlier plan would have required users to verify their age by submitting a photo of their ID or a video recording of their face to one of the platform’s third-party vendors. That approach drew sharp criticism from the Discord community, who were wary of handing over biometric and personal data to a company they already trusted with their conversations.

“Age assurance draws strong opinions and scepticism, especially when it involves sharing biometric information or a form of ID,” Vishnevskiy wrote in a new blog post. “At the same time, age assurance laws are expanding, and since my last post we’ve had to launch age assurance in other regions, including in Brazil and in Texas. We’re hearing from policymakers in countless states and countries who want stronger teen protections, from the European Union to Indonesia. To me, that makes it more important than ever to show that this can be done in a privacy-preserving way: one where more than 90% of you won’t have to confirm your age.”

A Guess-Based System With Multiple Verification Paths

The revised system relies on signals such as how long an account has existed and the types of servers a user participates in to estimate age, rather than demanding upfront identification. “We don’t look at your messages, calls, or other content,” Vishnevskiy promised, underscoring the company’s effort to keep the core of user data untouched. If Discord’s algorithm automatically places an account in the 18+ adult range, nothing changes. Users flagged as falling into the 13-to-17 range will instead receive additional safety protections that block age-restricted content, spaces, and settings.

For adults who are not automatically recognised as such, Discord is offering a range of non-biometric verification methods. Users can now input credit card information or allow the Apple App Store or Google Play Store to share an age rating with the platform, among other options. “We’ve vetted every method, and the data you provide to us and our vendors is only ever used to determine your age group, so you can pick whichever option you’re most comfortable with,” Vishnevskiy added, pointing to a fuller list of alternatives available on his official statement.

“Any form of age assurance, and the possibility of sharing something biometric or an ID, is a controversial topic. Rightfully so, because of what it represents and where internet legislation around the world is heading: toward a more gated internet. This is bigger than us. We’ve chosen to launch our stronger protections for teens everywhere using the most privacy-preserving approach we could build, including where it isn’t yet required by law, because we believe it’s the right thing to do.”

The framing of the rollout as a privacy-first move reflects a broader tension in the industry. By offering non-biometric options globally, even in regions where the law does not yet require them, Discord is positioning itself ahead of stricter regulations that might otherwise force a more invasive system. The company is betting that a global, privacy-conscious standard will shape how teen safety and user privacy evolve together over the coming years, and it is encouraging users to voice their perspectives in their own regions.

With the new system now rolling out this week, Discord is signaling that its stance on age assurance will remain a live and evolving issue as lawmakers across the globe continue to tighten rules around online minors. The company’s willingness to absorb criticism and redesign its approach suggests that the relationship between teen protection and user privacy will define the platform’s regulatory trajectory for years to come. As age-assurance laws expand from Texas and Brazil to the European Union and Indonesia, Discord’s privacy-preserving model may well set a benchmark for how major online services balance safety with the fundamental right to keep personal data private.
